Is there any country that has no debt ?

What I don't understand is why european countries borrow of each other, for example (approx figures from last time I looked) the UK owes Germany £260 billion, and the Germans owe the UK £200 billion. How does that work then ?

there are.. but thats not important.. the ratio of debit to gdp is important..  and of course the debit interest rates and debit trends..

if its continously increasing your are in trouble..

Cem, all to often I look at the bank statement and think `we could afford a meal out this week`  but I don't because I have been almost brain washed that we can't afford it.

To get out of a recession you need people spending and confidence....
Not only brainwashed into thinking you can't afford it, Mark, but that you should really be squirrelling it away for the future, just in case.
As you say, this is counter-productive to growth of any sort but, while consumer confidence is so low, it's a perfectly understandable action.

Rods......please do not post up any more links for a few days. Just read the whole of the Tullet Prebon synopsis (why all the nice piccies?) and, while interesting, most of it was historical and has been well documented on various platforms.I agree with the conclusions but you don't need to be a genius to see what's coming.

Oh, and my wife, who has had her retirement age increased by eight years and her pension contributions increased with no guarantee of ever seeing it.
Does anyone know any 68 year old teachers? Would you want an old codger teaching your kids?

There seems to be a definite cycle managed by the media somehow. Some good figures come out, the media pounce on it, a story, whoopee some good news. Then the counter story, the ifs and buts and should have beens if so and so hadn't done this that and the other.

What's done is done, move on. Onward onward ever onward.
