starter doing strange things
« on: 02 March 2013, 13:09:16 »

Hi all and sorry for the spelling in advance.Seem to have a strange problem with the starter on the mig 2.2 derv 2003,hade the car for approx 18 months now and its on its 4th starter from new first 2 were main stealer parts fitted by them 1 from motor facters and the last a used one but always seems to have the same problem. When i first start the car from cold (starts pretty quick)it seems like the ring gear is missing a couple of teeth ,it starts to turn over as normal then makes the horrible sound like it has disengaged keep the key turned and it then starts as normal . This only happens on the first start of the day the next time i try it it starts fine doesnt matter if its 10minets later or 10 hours it just dont like the mornings.have checked the wiring cant seem to find any problems there even fitted new battery and alternator any ideas please thanks all.

Might be a idea to check the teeth on the flywheel. I had a transit once that lost a section of teeth and sounded like a faulty starter.

Did wounder about the ring gear myself as thats just what it sounds like but when i replaced the last starter looked at it as best as i could through starter hole and all seems ok.I know that when it stops the engine will always stop in approx one of three places so this would explain why it always does it but it seems only to be the first start of the day, have even tried cranking it without it starting then starting it as normal and thers the noise again but if it starts even if for only a second then i restart its fine may have to live with it until it dont start. Wish i still had me old transit lol.

Does it lose any coolant? (wondering if it could be coolant in one of the cylinders after standing over-night)

Coolant is fine in fact better than fine havent needed to put any in her since last winter when i changed the coolant. having looked through the forum im starting to wonder if there might be some sort of current drain on the battery over nignt which might make the starter slower than normal on first start up and may be as the engine starts to fire its not disengageing quick enough,I still have the dreaded sounder fitted and have heard that they can drain the battery? might be just clutching at straws .

When ther starters were removed were the teeth on the starter chewed and damaged,? if they were then the fly wheel ring gear is almost certainly damaged and will require renewal.
Best bet is a replacement fly wheel from a breaker on here.

Hi gary no the starters teeth were fine the last two any way didn't see the others ,they have all been replaced as they seem to have sezed the bearings or thats what i have been told .The last two motors have been starting the car fine but on the first start of the day they have seemed like there is a flat battery even with a jump start still turns over but very slowley ,so at first changed the battery and alternator (120amp) but problem gets worse until it wont turnover at all with motor of car its still dead this only seems a problem on the first start of the day .Fit new starter motor starts fine at the moment any way fingers crossed but sounds like as you all say teeth missing but im sure there fine on both the starter and the ring gear would rather not remove the box if i dont have to more than i can handle at the moment and then wile its off new clutch or not ?

You should be able to check the flywheel teeth thru the starter motor aperture.

Have you checked the main feed wiring to the starter motor for volt drop/ loose battery crimp problem?

Mine wails like a banshee first start and has done so for the last 100k iirc ::) if it still throws the engine over I'd be inclined to leave it tbh :y

Removing the powersounder before it starts beeping can only be a good thing :y
