Off to WIM
« on: 06 May 2008, 08:59:11 »

I've had a fun weekend away, that will result in a trip to WIM.  Came out to the Omega on Sunday morning to find the front right tyre flat as a pancake.  I got the AA to come out an put the spare on, expecting to see a lovely nail in it, but there wasn't.

Looking over the tyre the inside of the shoulder had worn down so far that it was bald for a centimetre wide section.  The overall culprit was a small 2.5cm gouge in that bald patch that had a couple of bits of wire visible.

As the tyres have now done over 25 000 miles, it's time to change them.  So, I was thinking that a trip to WIM would be a great idea so that I can get a set of tyres, get them balanced and have the geometry sorted.  This will all hopefully resolve the propensity for the Omega to dive for the kerb when I let go of the steering wheel.

First thing to do is phone WIM and see if they can fit me in before I go to the Peak Distric for the next bank holiday weekend.  Don't fancy such a trip with no spare tyre.

Having looked at the WIM contact details on the website, there's no landline number mentioned.  I assume this is a legacy of only recently moving premises?

It would appear that when I first called I spoke to Tony, and I've now just spoken to Mark.

As mentioned previously, the geometry setup will cost me £85 inc. VAT.

As for the tyres, I've been quoted Dunlop SP3000s at £93.80 a corner for a set of four.

Looking at previous posts, from a premium brand perspective, people have favoured Continentals and Michelins, but they're asymmetric unlike the Dunlops, and this is a cause of tramlining.

So, need to think carefully about what I go for...

I'd be surprised if you get 25k out of them though! We've found they grip well but don't wear too good.

Michelins wear well and no tramlining but expensive. Alot of omega people like the Goodyear eagle F1's also. Pirelli's good value but some have reported problems.

Well I've spent a while digging out threads and posts on tyres, including a thead of mine from January this year.

I've decided to go for the Continental PremiumContact 2s all round.

Roll on the 21st April!

I find that Falken FK452's are pretty good. Tony fitted 2 for me last week at £85 each incl. fitting and VAT. :y
