Comic Relief, along with Children in Need, should be shut down until the BBC (and ITV for comic relief) stop backing them. Its unfair on other charities.

To be honest, most of the mainstream, "pointless" charities you could find similar shocks, I'm sure.

But people don't give to CR or CIN because they believe in what the charity does, they get swept in with it.

Clearly, and fully understood. Though I'm sure all these charities that help prisoners and the psycos in society have people with similar views against them.

Agreed again.Im very selective indeed about which charities I give any support to. :y
It has become a sector of the economy and a career choice option for the most part, rather than a an area of support for those who genuinely need help.

Indeed, Albs.  On my floor in the office, we have a call centre, and they are always doing some pointless crap for CIN or CR. They have learned now not to ask me for sponsoring some "nothing" activity, like waxing the manager's legs.

Also in the office is a lady who volunteers her spare time for some animal charity (can't remember which one). Thats more genuine, so she gets donations from me occasionally...  ...esp when she brings in cakes ;D

My dad died of a heart attack, so I try to give to BHF. There are a handful of others that I choose to give to when I can, and I choose to for personal reasons.

Macmillan are now off my giving list, after not really wanting the £20 notes I was waving at them, prefrring me to fill in a direct debit form. So they got neither, and I suspect never will again from me.

But CIN and CR will never, ever see a penny from me, as they are effectively wiping out the good charities, having so much free prime time TV advertising from the BBC...

The RSPCA are as bad. A friend of mine volunteered to be a home visitor. He used to be sent to check a premises before the RSPCA released an animal. He packed it up due to two main reasons....one, being sent miles on silly ventures, and two, the top dog getting £100,000 a year, whilst he got a few pence a mile to travel all over the west country.
I'll give you a couple of true examples......
A lady offered to take a goldfish. My friend had to go to check the pond. No problem. Fish delivered. But three months later, he was ordered to do a house check on the fish. 'Don't be stupid' he said, 'Its in a pond with dozens more, how the hell am I gonna know it'. He was still sent !!!!!!! He said he looked in the pond, never saw a dead one, so said all was ok ;D

A girl wanted two kittens. She lived in a house where the front door opens straight onto the road. You know...usually, there are a couple of concrete pillars outside to keep traffic wide. He advised against allowing the kittens to go there. He was overuled. Sent back three months later, he asked to see the kittens. 'I have not got them anymore' says the girl, 'They both got run over'.

And as a finale ;D.....
My friend never did the first check on this one.... a home was needed for some Mallards. A farmer evidently said they could go on his pond. My friend was sent there (miles away) three months later to check them. No ducks. 'What do you expect' said the farmer...'They were wild, they have flown off with the others' Ducks fly in and out all the time...I ain't got a clue where they come from or go to.'
I think that was the straw that broke the camels back. He has told me of other incidents, and now won't give a penny to the RSPCA.

Sorry if a bit off topic, but it does show where your money goes!!!!! :y

Sadly I now have mixed feelings about them... :( They are at the top of my list as I have had personal support from them at a time when needed most. However at some point over the festive season I made an online donation, no problem, but I got a phone call, very much like a 'cold call' only when they said who they were did I start to listen, they wanted to thank me for my donation, fine, but then asked why I had chosen them. I told them that I had personal experience, they then wanted to know my medical history, which I was not prepared to go into on the phone, tbh I found this quite upsetting, though I am usually quite happy to speak about my experiences with the big 'C'.

On a similar note we had a recent caller at the door from the British Red Cross, asking if we had ever called an Ambulance, well we have, for me - related to C, for swmbo - Heart Attack, and for Miss Vamps - Unconscious after unexpected collapse. They then wanted to discuss the reasons etc, that I felt was inappropriate on the doorstep at tea time, I had to ask them to leave....

I like really local good causes, where you can see where you money goes.... :y

I agree with Lizzie, The Salvation Army will always get donations from me, an excellent charity.
