vented or non vented discs?
« on: 29 March 2013, 08:31:55 »

from my limited knowledge a vented disc is better because it allows air to flow through it so keeps it cool and might be a bit lighter,am i missing any other points?
now i can see this being good on a perfomance car or car that is used on track.
now my mate has got to do the discs and pads on his daughters car[which is only 1100cc and needs to be moted before he gives it her]now if he goes for vented discs[which are fitted now] they are about tenpounds more expensive than the solid discs ad of course use the same pad which ever disc he users.now as hes not working he would like to go for the cheaper option but wants the car safe so not knowing the anser he asked me.now i think he will be okay but thought i would ask on here.

If vented are fitted, that's what I'd fit personally :y.

If vented are already fitted then that's what you are stuck with, the caliper brackets and probably the calipers themselves are different

How can it 'be okay' to fit a none vented disc into the much wider vented disc caliper?  ???  ???  ??? We've seen this a few times here where pillocks have fitted solid discs to the back of late 2.6/3.2 car where vented discs are fitted. A vented disc will be over an inch thick, a solid disc will be 1/2" or so thick, there will become a point when one pad will wear to the extent that its piston will pop out of its bore in the caliper ...... fluid everywhere, & no brakes on that part of the system.

Maybe he should also fit the skinny-est tyres he find to the car too .... they'll fit and be cheaper too

As said, fit the correct discs. Or the calliper pistons will fall out.

When they ask " solid or vented " it's not a choice they are giving, like do you take sugar in your tea.

Go check what's currently fitted and fit them. Unless he wants to fit the relevant callipers as well. Which will be more than a £10

I have trouble understanding why a 1.1L car needs vented disks, TBH. My money is on the current ones being solid.

As said, though, check what's on the car currently and fit the same.

some intresting comments
discs thicker [good point]
caliper pistons falling out  ;D ;D ;D come on  you would have to wear the pads down to the metal and its the same pad i would assume the same caliper
but as everybody seams to be saying if its vented stick with vented then thats what i will pass on.
thanks

Yep, as the pads wear down, the pistons WILL fall out. Ask Mick Dundee.

Actually, no. We're all big fibbers and making it up as some big joke. Yeah fit your solid discs to calipers designed for vented ones, it will be fine. No problem at all. ::)  ...FFS ! ;D

What's that they say about assumption? ;D

Trust us, it's NOT the same caliper. A vented disk needs a broader caliper, and this will give enough clearance for the pistons to pop out, leaving you with no brakes. ::)

Read my quote above  ???  ???  ??? ...... a solid disc is thin - a vented disc is fat. You need a fat caliper to fit a fat disc inside it. A thin disc in a fat caliper will be like the proverbial up a shirt sleeve and on one side or other your piston WILL fall out after very little pad has been worn off. The pads are the same for each disc because they both have the same surface area & diameter.

As others have said if it has vented then refit vented because they are alot thicker::) ::) ;D a few years ago Volvo went back to solid disc's on their cars as they had a problem with the vented disc's warping but they were atleast 1" thick, they have now gone back to vented disc's.  ;D ;D

As others have said, you need to fit what came off. So visually check first.

You must NOT mix and match discs and calipers, that will end in tears at bedtime. I can't emphasise how dangerous that can be.  Unless you really don't like the owner ;D

Quite a few members saw what happened to Mike Dundee's car when some cowboy garage fitted solid discs instead of the vented it should have had. He was lucky to escape disaster and considering his wife and daughters were in the car with him at the time, doesn't bear thinking about. So you're only going to get one answer on here, fit the right part vented or non vented whatever the makers decided on. Is your mates daughters life worth that tenner? Oh and if the worst happens imagine trying to explain to the court how you made the car unsafe and caused the death of a bus queue of innocent bystanders all to save a tenner. Good luck with Big Winston in that case.
