Can't open car - help
« on: 25 April 2010, 16:21:06 »

My daughter was playing in the car yesterday and i have noticed she switched the lights on. Problem is i can't open the car with the key fob and even when i turn as hard as i can in the key lock the car still won't open. Obviuosly i'll need to charge the car battery but i just can't get in to release the bonnet catch. Any one got any solutions before i call the aa?

Try wd40 in the key lock they often seize up through lack of use  :)

The lock will turn clockwise if turned hard, and unlock, but the buttons may well stay down! The door can then be opened. ;) ;) ;)

I've had this problem before with very low battery and as noted below, turning the key the door can be opened even thought the button isn't up... Due to recent lack of use, I think my battery has gone stone dead and even though I've go the key turned as far as possible I can't open the door.  My question is do I need any life at all in the battery to get the lock to work or should I be able to manage without the battery?  I suppose there's no other ideas...

Any thoughts appreciated, many thanks :(

I've done it in the past without a battery connected so no it's purely mechanical.

Thanks CaptainZok,
For some reason I had to force the key very hard this time but eventually... success.  I'm in and jump started so all good!

Thanks again,

Martin :y

You have to turn the key so far that you think something might break. Then at that point, turn it more. Works every time :y

If you are very worried about breaking the key connect another 12v battery to the starter motor or I believe there is a way of connecting to a rear light. As i have a tow bar the battery can be connected here, I used my small golf cart battery to open my door.

if you use wd-40 on your door locks make sure you wait a few weeks for it to disipate then use some grafite powder in the lock to re-lubricate it as they are dry lubrecated locks and the wd-40 washs this lube away  :y
