My clit humms!
« on: 22 April 2013, 22:55:18 »

Okay it's my other half's clit. I could never abandon my Mig.

She has a problem with humming relative to road speed. It sounds as though it is definitely coming from the o/s. It can be made louder by turning left and quieter by turning right.
I've checked for play and there is a real tiny bit on n/s and none on o/s.
It's front wheel drive and I had it up on stands with the wheels off and the car going at 30mph. The n/s driveshaft is spinning steadily, however the o/s driveshaft appears to be wobbling in the middle and the cv joints feel firm.
There is a counterweight thing half way along the driveshaft which is 750mm long.
I'm not convinced it's a bearing problem and I'm wondering if the turning to change the loudness is because of the sound being transmitted through the suspension rather than the bearing being an issue.

My gut tells me that a driveshaft shouldn't be visibly wobbling but I just need a second opinion that doesn't involve getting rid of the car and the clit forums are worse than #@!%.

You guys have been great with helping me in the past and I have my Mig which is testimony to that.

Any thoughts would be brilliant.

TIA

it must not have any wobble..  and bearings will make noise when they get very old.. mine were making noise around 100 K (kms) and I changedl them all (4).. although not sure its the source of humming in your case :-\

and must add v-belt (alternator) can be very noisy if parts not original

Try rocking wheels at 12/6 position - any play = shot wheel bearings ;)

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies :y. I'm going to replace the driveshaft first as it's an easy job ??? plus I can then measure the bearing since there's 2 sizes, typical  >:(

I'll update once it's fitted.

Thanks

The early, i.e upto 2004, Focus had a similar problem - caused by a rear wheeling bearing.

Any decent garage should be able to tell which one with the car up in th air  :y

That'll be the tiny French pixy holding the whole thing together. They get bored after a few years and start humming to themselves. Just wait until it starts singing . . .  :o
