Hey peoples
Just become the proud owner of a V plate 2.5td elite. It's a lovely old thing, a manual aswell, and in very good condition overall. I've got a couple of quick questions;

Having never even owned a Vauxhall before, firstly where is the OBD port on these, I've got a cheapo OBD2 reader off the bay and want to see if it will talk to it.

I am also looking to blank off the EGR pipe from the crankcase, is there a guide on here how to do it?

Thirdly does anybody have any good advice on what the best chip would be to use with this engine, it's ok on boost but as you all know a little dicey when overtaking on an incline etc.

It's a curious pearlescent purply blue grey colour - does anybody know the name?? I'll get some piccies up later

IIRC from when I owned one:

The 2.5TD isn't OBD-II compliant so you need a specialist code reader (e.g. a genuine Tech2 or similar).

There's a chip supplier known on the forum contactable via, if memory serves, TheBoy - however if your car is an automatic you'll need to change the gearbox to the stronger AR35 from the larger petrol V6 cars from the AR25 currently fitted or it'll probably only last a few hundred miles after chipping (although there is one success story on the forum with an AR25 there are many failure stories!).

Not OBDII, use a paperclip you may be lucky.

How did I forget the paperclip trick? Given how many times I used it myself.. D'oh!

ODB2 didn't really become standard in the UK till around 2001 for Petrols and 2003/4 for Diesels IIRC, Ive had three 2.5TD's now all pre 2000, none of them would Paperclip, some do some dont, but as Rob says you may be lucky. 

Plenty of 2.5TD owners and ex owners on here with experience, so Im sure your be fine.

The car is a manual so no issues around torque numbers 

Just did a trip to Reading and back this morn from Southampton (not hanging around) got 40.8 ave on the obc which i though wasn't too bad seeing as I haven't even serviced yet (did top up with 10/40 synth before I went)

Paint code is on a black label stuck onto the inside of the drivers door pillar..i think

I can get the guy who supplied my chip to contact you directly. Think he charges around £70 from memory. I was pleased with mine, though the rear tyres weren't.

Guessing your ECU is a 427, which gives a few options.

Note, when chipped, the onboard computer is optimistic on the mpg to the tune of around 15%

I was out for a drive in it this eve, it really is comically slow. In third gear on to a slip road, foot flat to the floor it takes around 30seconds to get to 60mph. It can't be in that bad a state of health as it's doing around 39mpg ave. I reckon if it wasn't driving the armada of fans that run under the bonnet under acceleration it would save a few ponies

I blanked off the egr with a 10p piece which fitted perfectly and also experimented running with an empty airbox. It did feel a little different but I still have trouble out-running the oap's in my village on their scooters.

I'm going to look at this pragmatically because I am sure that an engine with BMW DNA running through it can be made to perform a little better than this! watch this space!
