Security cameras, advice required

Hi fellas.
At the Community Centre where we hold the Wycombe meet, the unit that that has the security cameras plugged into it, I think it is called a Multiplex unit ?.... well, this unit has gone wrong, and it has been taken away for repair by our alarm company, Chubb.
I have not been happy with this company for ages, and am thinking of dumping them.
They have lent us a unit but are charging £100 a week for it till ours comes back. I think this is a rip off.
I am thinking of buying a new unit, and even a secondhand one as a spare. Can anyone fill me in with details of these units, cost etc. I have googled, but do not understand the tech stuff. I have looked on e-bay for examples, and they seem to be quite reasonable, if I am looking at the right equipment.
Going back to our security system, I have enquired with a few people about quotes and discussing changing to another company, but no-one has so far even bothered to come and look. Its costing me (the club) over a grand a year just for service contracts, and to be honest, I don't know what I am getting from them.
Any advice will be welcomed :y

There not to pricey, easy to setup and use so if you have anybody even half tech savvy then go your own route.

At the heritage centre we have a 32 channel unit with 1Tb drive and a DVD recorder so we can save recordings.

Its been reliable for the last 7 years and cost around 500 notes.

That sounds the sort of thing I want...what do you mean by 32 channels...is that the amount of camera it would take as a maximum. Our unit at the moment records on dvd, but in my opinion, the quality was not that good.

Yes, it can take 32 cameras.

The quality you can set plus you can trade off fps against resolution etc.

Ours records to harddrive and then you can take a backup if required.

I have just phoned the Centre and the one they have lent us is the same as ours which is....

Even buying an equivalent or better is better than paying £100 per week to those robbers >:(

I know an Engineer who does this for a living, He's ex Chubb or ADT, CCTV, Door Entry, Sound Systems, etc, He does most of London and the surrounding area's.

Just checked, ours is a Techwin (now Samsung).

There are some of these for 500-600 pounds with 3Tb drives and 16 camera inputs which are top of the range stuff, these chaps seem to ahev plenty of options, possibly worth giving them a call.

You can buy a cheap Chinese 4 channel piece of crap for less than that!
