Oil sump & Cam cover gasket fitting
« on: 24 June 2013, 11:31:58 »

Hi All,

Does the bottom part of the oil sump (where drain plug is) have a gasket or do I use the RTV sealant I've got for the cam cover gaskets?

When fitting the gasket to the cam cover should I put any RTV sealant at the corners of the cover or is it just on the metal work that the cams are in?

Many thanks - Paul

Thanks RobG  :y

In the Guide it says to torque up to 8NM working from middle out in circle, do I do them up finger tight first, then torque up, or torque up straight away?

Silly question I know but I was under impression that you got things nipped up before torquing  :-[

You will have to act fairly quickly due to there being a lot to do up before the sealant goes off. I'd suggest maybe every 3rd one to get it mostly in place and then infill from there. Use of a ratchet attachment will help speed this up a fair bit too ......

Have you got the pan off yet?

Hi Robert,

No, not yet   ::)

Need to order the  #93165267 first & I'm still cleaning up the parts of the engine I can get at. you were right about the amount of paper roll you get through  :y

Cam gaskets, cambelt kit & water pump arrived earlier this morning so am doing the water pump at the moment  :)

Hi all

I hope I have done the right thing? I removed the cam sprockets to remove the back cam cover as there was oil in the back cover.  ??? The cams were locked at TDC and I undid the long bolts that hold them on and I will put hem back in the same way with the locking kit holding them in pace, I will need to check torque values when I put them back.  ???

At least I have made some progress, the new water pump is installed  :)

Now for the pictures of the front of the engine showing cam seals and the oil leaks plus pictures close up and from top looking down, there quite a few and I can't get them to sit side by side, so apologies in advance  ::)

showing new water pump  ;)   and the 3 areas where oil is at the front of the engine

Closer Front view of 1 & 2

Closer front view of 3 & 4

Looking down on front end of 1 & 2

Looking down on front end of 3 & 4

Closer front downward at cam 1

Closer front downward of cam 3

Closer downward look at cam 4

Close look at cam 4 seal

Close look at cam 3 seal

Close look at cam 1 seal

To my untrained eye the seals look to be okay and the oil is coming from the cam gasket where there is still the sealant used to stop this type of failure  ??? However, before I continue cleaning the engine up and putting things back where they should be I would be very appreciative of some considerably more knowledgeable people to express their views  :)

More likely cam cover gaskets mate - remove all the old "black gasket goo" before fitting new gaskets/black sealant.

Well done on the cleaning - much cleaner than when I've done them ::) ::) ;)
