Thanks to all for help and patients
« on: 30 June 2013, 20:34:46 »

Hi All,

May I thank everyone who gave advice, directions and encouragement to me when I had the coolant leak from the coolant pump. In particular AndyC for getting me the parts I needed and (chasing around for a better price :y), Lincs Robert for hiring & ultimately selling me the cam locking kit, dbug for giving directions on posting photos from Dropbox plus the other bits here and there, JamesV6CDX for timing belt in particular, RobG and Kevin Wood re gaskets and the general encouragement expressed by All.  :y  :y  :y  :y

Having never attempted much more than plug changes, brake discs and pads in the past, I was not looking forward to having to do the job (and even less when I got going), rather than take it to the local garage (as would have if working).  ;)

As it turned out in addition to the water pump, I ended up doing the cam belt as it was getting near to the 40K mark since last done. I also needed to do some very overdue cleaning of the breathers, inside plenum, air intakes associated with fuel injector rail, all the valves with spring loaded closure plates & the bagpipes - all either oiled up or more commonly tarred up. Plus the replacement of the cam cover gaskets which were leaking on both heads ::) change oil, drop sump, clean it inside as well as the pan, and an attempt to get as much oil and grime from around the engine itself.

Most of the work I did (with your aid), would not have been done by the garage, or if by chance, they knew what to do, wouldn't have been done as thoroughly as I was. What's more it would would have cost more than 3 times the market value of the old girl plus the parts I'd imagine  ??? ::)

To finish off, I finished putting everything back together last night (Saturday) around dusk, rather than wait until morning I started her up, fired first time spluttered a bit (air in injector rail?) then started running rather roughly & the engine light came on in dash  :(    turned her off, looked under bonnet to find that a vacuum pipe had come off when I was fitting the bagpipes and hadn't noticed  ::)  Start again, took a load of attempts to start and when running was almost like a "bag of spanners"  :'(  turned off and went in very deflated - all my pride at doing the job in tatters, especially as SWMBO had asked who I was going to get it working once I'd finished with it, earlier that afternoon  ;D

This morning took laptop out with OBDII reader and found that I had lost the driver disc for the "My Naff Code Reader" program (put o,p,com no spaces and naff etc came up!) which was needed as I had done a clean install on laptop late last year  >:( However I found a copy of a program that I got to do SWMBO's focus and tried that, bingo linked to car awaiting ecm, so while that was going on I look under the bonnet only to see that I hadn't plugged the cam sensor plug back in to socket at front of 2-4-6, it was under the plenum & I'd missed it in the poor light the night before. Checked laptop and error log showed cam sensor not functioning  :) cleared fault and started her up, first time  :y

Yes I'd done it  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

Granted she sounds like the tappets need adjusting, but I was warned of that and after 300 odd miles I'll change the oil, oil filter & add some Wynnes Tappet stuff. Then regular 3K mile oil changes.

Now all that's left to do is adjust the handbrake so that it will stop the car (despite my handbook stating that it is for parking only and should not be used to stop the car!!), for my local MOT chap, failed it last year 4 times, 5th time passed in a day had it so tight that it was rubbing with handbrake off  :o Just as well he's only ¼ mile from my house!

If anyone knows a way of adjusting so that you don't have to back it off after test, please let me know  ;)  :y

Time for a beer or two now ;)

Cheers OOF  :y

Paul

Nice one :y

It can be really frustrating when jobs don't quite go to plan, but then you take a step back, as a few questions of people here, and before you can say 'Bish,Bash Bosh' it's all sorted :y

You did everything right - took your time, didn't panic, and asked for help and provided photos when requested.

Excellent work by all involved :)
