Has the law changed ?
« on: 18 July 2013, 18:38:25 »

Just had a visit from some friends. They live in Llandudno. There son is roughly the same age as my eldest (19). There son has just been caught speeding (35 in a 30). Now he admits the offence and admits he was stupid.

A few weeks go by and he has a a letter from DVLA. This letter states he is not allowed to drive any vehicle bigger than a car until he reaches the age of 25.

Has anyone heard of this before ? I find it rather odd. Just to add clean licence up to this speeding ticket and now has 3 points on his licence. Is this UK wide or Wales only ? I ask as my son is an apprentice plant fitter and finishes his apprenticeship this year and will be expected to drive bigger vehicles when necessary for work purposes.

There is a probationary period for two years after passing the test. Any misdemeanor can result in anything upto and including a forced retest and ban :-\

That'll be a lesson worth remembering when the youngsters go looking for driving jobs, which was precisely why it was introduced ::) to teach a sense of responsibility to those who tend to have none :y

:o :o :o Not heard of that one before! I know that they've shook up the categories on the licenses recently, and all the codes have changed slightly.

Seems a bit harsh 35 in a 30 getting a ticket, 10% + 2 applied is only 35mph! Was it a camera by any chance? Under the 'New' ACPO guidelines that should have been a speed awareness course. 35-42 speed awareness, 43-55 EFPN, over that straight to summons!

Any vehicle bigger than a car?  Ambiguous at best!!!!

He can drive anything upto 3.5 tonnes with less than 8 passenger seats and a trailer of less than 750KG's.  Same as everyone else who passed their test after 1st Jan 1997.

Not sure how they'll enforce it unless they invent a new class of vehicle and endorse his license with it. :-\
