As a VERY general rule, Building insurance usually covers what does not fall out if you turn the dwelling upside down and shake it. What does fall out, you need contents insurance for.

Heh, I like that description!

Then there's the level of cover.

As an example. My central heating pipes leaked under the downstairs concrete floor.

Ok, ring the insurance company. "We cover the damage caused by a leak. But NOT repairing the leak."  ...luckily we had pipe work cover with British gas as part of boiler and plumbing insurance for the gas safe certificate. (Although the boiler is not currently covered as the old one was too old, and we haven't told them about the new one, as its currently under warranty, I think ;D ....and on and on and on it goes ::) )

After an event like the pipe leak, you do tend to wonder why you bother paying for insurance at all. Given the number of get outs involved. We never claimed on the pipe leak as the damage was minimal.
