Insurance for Irmscher Omega
« on: 20 August 2013, 22:19:08 »

I just got hold of an Irmscher Omega, I was just wondering where I might insure such a thing?

If you're having trouble with the usual Insurance Companies you may have to try the ones who specialise in modified vehicles such as Adrian Flux.

Remember that the irmscher kit, complete with wheels, body kit, steering wheel etc, was a factory fit option available available new at the dealers.

Its NOT a non standard modification without any form of factory approval.

Although I premium to cover it will apply, IF You want it replaced or repaired in case of damage.

If you you do NOT want it covered, but do want to inform the insurer, (which you do) it shouldn't cost you anything more to insure than a standard omega.

That is my experience with direct line and Admiral.

I can hear key boards being sharpened as I type that, so those those that have not had that experience may not have made the point that it is a factory fit option.

But there we are.... :)

Adrian Flux happily accept mine as a factory fit option (which it was) at no extra premium, along with the towbar and the LPG kit .. :) however they do state that if damaged it "may" be replaced by standard parts if Irmscher ones are not available ... and as we know they cannot be purchased new I forsee a small fight if any bits get damaged beyond repair.... most Insurers are very loath to fit second hand parts, yet that would be the only source of Irmscher body parts.

I quite agree. My son has a 2000 Irmscher Astra with all the goodies on it. And it cost no more to insure than a standard one as that is how it came out of the factory.

If the kit was retro fitted that is entirely another ball game.

Well it doesn't have a body kit as it is an ex-police high speed pursuit vehicle.  I am told it has uprated suspension and is tuned for acceleration although I can't say exactly how.  Also I was considering slamming it between 50 and 70mm.  Would this effect the insurance premium?  It looks like a standard Omega Estate otherwise.

Irmscher is just name given to chav-me parts, it's not a model of Omega. You have an MV6/Special if its ex-police, for tuning, stiffer springs for all police gear, some had an LSD diff, with ratio to aid 0-60 at expense of top end speed.

Lowering it would increase premium, as its a modification.

As for lowering, it really doesn't take well to lowering more than 30mm (Front) and 20mm (Rear) from standard (or 15mm/5mm from lowered MV6).  Even the Irmscher 30mm all round is nothing but a PITA (hence, I need to lift my arse 10mm).

Slamming an Omega is pretty problematic due to the amount of overhang front and rear, making it impossible to do speed bumps.  Also, I don't think there is enough adjustment in the geometry to stop the tyres being ripped to shreds within a 3k.  Lastly, its probably too low to actually handle properly.
