Clutch noise getting worse
« on: 26 August 2013, 17:56:33 »

T367KHL 1999 2.0 petrol manual saloon
Since my last thread my son has begged for the spare car. leaving me to drive this noisy beast. The noise occurs as the clutch is disengaged or re-engaged, with engine running. It does not occur with clutch fully depressed. I got the car over the pit tonight, me in the pit, wife at the wheel depressing the clutch pedal. The noise certainly comes from the bell housing. I imagine it is the clutch thrust bearing, which AndyB tells me is no longer a carbon bush, but a roller bearing.

Looks to me like the clutch has to come apart to cure it. Car is  14 years old, 200K miles on clock, engine warning light on. I fear it has had it.

Easy enough job to drop manual box (easier than auto), especially with a pit to hand ???

Thought it was release bearing all along ;)

That's all classic thrust bearing symptoms. Although it's often a worn clutch that causes it to fail.
Not changing the entire clutch whilst the gearbox is removed is a false economy.
