My 51reg 2.2CDX Auto, which I've had over ten years, started an intermittent fault about two years ago.
The original fault (two years ago), the exhaust emissions light, indicated a faulty cam sensor. After two replacements, no success.
Replacing the timing belt was also unsuccessful.
The problem is intermittent and goes through the following stages:
1. Situation OK, car drives beautifully until
2. difficulty starting (does not fire immediately bud succeeds after a few revs -very sluggish, misfiring when cold and the engine electronics light comes on and the car does not have much power). Switching off and restarting often clears the warning and car drives OK. This intermittent signal continues for a bit until
3. exhaust emissions light comes on and comes on with each restart for some days. The engine fires OK and no engine electronics light until
4. the exhaust emission light goes out and we go back to stage one.
The garage electronics show the P0170/0340 codes (cam sensor and lean mixture).
Over the same period I've had the original exhaust/cat converter replaced (old age) and the engine block manifold blew last year - but neither have affected the ongoing problem.
Two questions:
1. Any suggestions as to what's going on and what might be done shart of replacing the ECU
2. If I continue to live with it, do I run the risk of writing off the engine?
Many thanks
Robert
