Android - Custom ROM howto
« on: 29 September 2013, 21:38:59 »

Following on from a discussion on Chrisgixers thread about garage wiring which bifurcated and became increasingly off topic:

Thanks Mark. The phone works fine so I don't see that you 'screwed up' (especially given the quantity of morphine you were dosed up on at the time)
I still haven't found any spare time to look into alternative ROMs but I would like to know what I need to do to when I do find time :y

You need a program called Odin, and an insecure kernel......and that's it.

I have a suitable kernel here that includes ClockWorkMod recovery and SuperUser so you can make a complete "ghost" image of the handset in case you kill it along the way, I'll put a quick "how to" together along with the required files in the next couple of days for you bud  :y

As far as custom ROM's go, I tend to stick to Samsung based ROM's and I'd recommend OmegaROM as a good starting point as you dictate what the default system apps will be (eg, Facebook, etc) rather than your service provider (in other words, no useless bloatware taking up space).

You can also repartition the internal SD card to regain up to 3GB of internal storage dependant on system configuration, but we're probably better off saving that one for another day.

Insecure Kernel? does that mean rooting the phone?

Yes it does Andy, it's the only way to get a custom ROM on.

You can remove root afterwards, although this would disable certain inbuilt functionality within the ROM itself (eg, call recording, call blocking, etc).

Andyroid - a few questions I haven't managed to find the answers to through reading the OmegaROM website.

Q1 First (possibly silly) question... I use linux. I have various distros installed on various PCs and laptops. Most are set up with me (andy) as a normal user. When I want to install software I log in as root (or use su or sudo) then revert back to a normal user afterwards.
Does a rooted Android phone work like this? or does it run with root privileges all the time?

Q2 - how can I tell if an S3 is rooted?

Q3 - is the S3 I bought off you still rooted?

Q4 - does installing a stock ROM revert the phone to 'not rooted'?

Works in pretty much the same way, except you don't have to login/logout as a different user.
If an app wants root access, SuperUser (su) will bring up a dialogue box asking the user if root access is allowed or not.

Q2 - how can I tell if an S3 is rooted?

CPU-Z from the Play store will give you all the system info you need.

Q3 - is the S3 I bought off you still rooted?

No, It was reset to factory as per your request.

Q4 - does installing a stock ROM revert the phone to 'not rooted'?

Yes, however it does not reset the hidden binary counter that Samsung use to find out if you have been playing with it.
To reset the hidden counter, you need Triangle Away and SuperSU Pro

I've been trying to root my htc Desire, mainly to just clear out the crap Orange installed, but my reasonably techie colleagues (well, as far as they managed to root their own Desire and S3), have got nowhere with mine.  :(

They seem to think Orange have something different in place which is prohibiting the device being rooted.   :-\

What model Desire, and where is the rooting process failing?

I rooted my HTC Desire very simply by following the video guide here ..
