Cloud Printing
« on: 20 October 2013, 00:33:16 »

I know I am a bit behind times on some of this stuff but just set up Cloud Printing so I can print from ipad to a wireless printer. Took some time to understand the technology but it is very effective.

That would be very handy, we've loads of pics on iPad I'd like to print. Do you have a link to how you do this?

Depends on your printer - The one I use it with when away from home at another house is a Kodak C315 or similar.

You need a Google email address i.e someone@gmail.com.

The printer must be wifi enabled and basically you send an email to the printer at an address that google will allocate.

Or just get an airprint printer  ???, or plenty of utils to make a computer seem like an airprint device

I certainly wouldn't be wanting Google to handle any of my docs, as they don't provide free services out of the goodness of their hearts....

I was going to say - doesn't this mean Google get to read everything you print out? ::)

All of these things can be done in ways which give you privacy if you're prepared to do some research.

Google provide the "easy" way for their own ends, not just to make your life easier!

But do these alternatives work without a PC attached to the printer?

Googleprint is very handy if travelling without laptop and using printer at a regular location.

Dunno, as I use Airprint here - iOS device direct wifi to printer. My bro uses some 3rd party software that runs on an XP VM at work from when customers print from his gayPad.

Privacy is a major concern with Google. A very major concern.

Can't say I've ever wanted to print on a printer that's not in the same building as me - mainly because my level of organisation is such that there might be a pile of documents, other junk, a cat, etc. perched on said printer and interfering with the paper exit path. ::)

Its what they do with that data that worries me.  As said, they don't do the service for free.

Check if the printer can do airprint - most wifi printers made in the last 2 or 3 years can, though some silly HP ones need the HP app installed, as they can't

Maybe too many clouds in Durham.

With all things internet you need tremendous discipline to keep it all under control - I am sure it should be easier than this.

It was all very easy, did it all automatically - all for me, just did not put them in my Pictures or any other relevant file; found them on a  'cloud' - windows 8 all those floating boxes...... ::) ::) ::)
