Ask Jimbob!  ::)

Alternatively use good quality sharp side cutters.

Cut it as close to the unrequired nipple as you can, there should be enough solder left in that part of the cable
to stop it fraying :y

I use a pair of end nip cutters which are double hinged, like a bolt cropper.
These cut the ends so perfectly that the remain twisted together.
You *can* weld the ends of the cable back together (well, I can  :y ), but easier just to solder - even then, they sometimes untwist with the heat  :(

*Sharp* cold chisel, and a good hard smack to cut through all the wires together is another, workable, way

Best not to fit the ferrule on until you have got everything else sorted.  :y
