Microsoft Office

Went do write some letters today , apparently i have to pay now for the privileged to use microsoft office on my laptop  :-\ I wouldnt mind but it wont let me read my saved documents without paying them  >:(
Mite as well say goodbye to all my saved stuff  :'(
Any downloadable replacement available without emptying the pockets  :-\

Was it a 60 day trial, thats often included with new laptops?

A few freebies out there, but none are 100% compatible, though worth a try. OpenOffice might be worth a look.

As I tend to use Office (via work's Home Use Program(me)s), I'm a bit out of touch with the freebie ones.

Open office will do the job. Can be a bit buggy at times, but will also open all your saved ms stuff.

I found last time I used it (was a while ago), you often had to retweak all the layouts etc.

No not a trial , ive been using Office for 2 years on the same laptop  :( If i go to use it now it says free trial/buy/or enter key code . Office was installed from new a few years back .

Open office i will try then  :y

Well that was a quick fix  :) Downloaded Open Office and can read all my old documents once again . Thanks oof tech  ;) ;) :y

Is this not on a printed strip underneath the lap top? Mine was on a previous lap top that I bought with Office already installed..... :y :y

LibreOffice is a less buggy and a more compatible version of OpenOffice. Like TB said it is not 100% compatible, but it works for most mainstream functionality.

The only major problem I've had to date is with links in a .docx file to embedded files.

The other major problem is that being written in Java they are big executables and slow.  ???

But for those on a tight budget its comes with that important word FREE.  :y :y :y :y

I'd say Open/Libreoffice does a better job of opening MS office files than MS office itself, if you don't happen to have exactly the same version of Office as that which originated the file. ;D

There was a preload that gave, I think, 25 free uses, or goes rather than limiting it to a time span, so may have been that.

Open office is prone to losing the default template, and also randomly deciding to forget to add the file extension to saves, so if you start saving files and they aren't recognised, just rename to add the file extension at the end. Eg, test would be renamed to test.odt if it's a word type document.

As previously mentioned. Libre Office.

Invest just a bit of time with familiarization (not much) and free. I've given up using MS Office almost totally.  :y

I only use MS Office as its reasonably priced for an official version via software for students or mega cheap via the Home Use Program (if your company support it)

+1 for that, although there are plenty of cracks out there that do work (but we won't discuss that in public as it could potentially be deemed illegal and therefore leave you open to possible legal action)  ;)
