Y188NFA 2.2 petrol manual saloon
My son Ben's car. He called home for a shower at midday went to leave and his car would not start. he took his mother's 2.0 Omega leaving me the dead car to sort out. At 5pm I tried it and it started. It's a 2.2, so no codes. What might it be?

If it's anything like what happened to my previous 2.5 V6, it was a gamble, going out, as to whether I would get back again! It often started on the drive, then went into a major sulk when asked to restart coming away from my destination, having me wait for it to get into a better mood an hour or so later.
Worst case was coming home from Dorset - good old Green Flag recovered me back home to Essex!
And yes, after much head scratching (because it never played up for them, Sod's Law) it turned out to be the crank sensor.

Ron.

Thanks, Bigron. I had a similar experience on my 2.5 a couple of months ago. That's why my hunch is crank sensor. I have not had it before on a four pot Omega though.

Generally crank sensors do not prevent 2.2s from starting, although may need to turn over a few times (same as cam sensor failure)

Thanks, The Boy. It started this morning in about one second, idling steadily. Should I tell Ben to take it away and try it, or is there anything else I might check?l

As a test I started the car and let it idle for 30 minutes; then switched off; then tried to restart it. I did this three times, every time it restarted. Son came to collect the car at 4.30pm. It started, promptly stopped, and would not restart. Oh dear. What is wrong with it?
