Strange occurrence on LPG ....
« on: 26 January 2014, 17:54:17 »

Bit weird this ... LPG system is the BRC Sequent 56

Did about 25 miles this morning .. in bloody awful weather .. that included some motorway & some A roads all at "reasonable" speeds, and I avoided all the big puddles.. :) Car sat for an hour then was driven 5 miles to the LPG point ... all this done on LPG as normal without a single glitch.

Filled with LPG exactly as normal .. started engine, ran for about 5 secs then just died ...  with the EML light coming on just as it died. Read the codes (code reader lives in the boot) .. 6 codes .. all essentially the same .. #1 Injector open circuit, #2 injector open circuit ... etc !!  Reset the codes and tried again  .. Same thing .. runs for 5 seconds then dies with the EML coming on... same codes back. Checked under the bonnet ... nothing abnormal to be seen, all connections seem to be made.

Clear the codes again, select petrol only, car starts and runs without any problems. switch to LPG and it dies with the EML coming on, same faults ...

Now, as I understand it, the LPG ECU switches off the petrol injectors when it changes to the gas injectors. The system obviously knew there was gas in there as it was not auto-changing back to petrol, so it seemed to me that the LPG ECU was switching OFF the petrol injectors, but not firing the gas injectors ??

As it was persisting down, and I had no tools anyway, I drove home on petrol, absolutely no problems at all. Once it stopped raining I checked all connections again, and set up a meter to check for voltage at a gas injector. On this system the engine always starts on petrol then auto-changes once the gas pressure is high enough, so to get the voltage check I had to start the engine and wait for the changeover  ..  I expected the engine to just die again as the changeover occurred ... but it didn't ... ran like a dream ... nowt wrong that I can find/repeat ...

Have done 20 miles, with 10 stops/ restarts, all perfect. ... :(

So what is the connection between the act of refueling the LPG and it deciding not to run for about 30 minutes ??  Any one any ideas ??

Puzzled of Wiltshire  :(

I think the LPG ECU may have glitched, as you suggest. Maybe water has got in a bit.

Where is your ECU?

Ah, yes, that would concern me.

Hopefully it will dry out and not repeat

Correct , but scuttle is clear ... but not "dry" as large volumes of water have been cascading down there all most of the day ! Regularly check the drain due to the ECU being in there .. perhaps it just got a tad wetter than normal due to really heavy rain ...

Once it stops raining I'll lift the ECU out and check the connections... thanks for the idea .. :)

Sounds like the switch over solonoid on the vap to me, had the same symptoms on my jeep kme gold vap on the jeep, they dont like too much heat and are prone to giving problems. as to the fill up it was prob just co incidence. ::)
