Having read a few previous thread on the estate rear bearings it seems like having a home-made bearing extracting tool is rather useful, and I'm wondering if anyone localish to me (or Welwyn) might have one handy that could be borrowed?

Fortunately not for me, but a friend of mine has a DTi estate that's now making a very interesting 'woob woob woob' noise that increases with wheel rotation speed, sounds like it's from the back, and disappears when you turn left and unload the left hand side of the car.. and to me it sounds exactly like a failing bearing.


Seeing as he gave me a hand fixing the M3 SMG pump the other weekend I thought I'd see if anyone had a tool I could borrow to give him a hand with the bearing in return

I have the tools, for the drive flange, hub extractor and bearing remover.
You're welcome to  borrow them, but I'm in Chatham Kent, so not exactly close

You're only 30 mins from another mutual car tinkering friend of his & mine in Dartford, though

I'll bear you in mind Nick, thanks Hopefully with the right tools the job won't involve too much swearing ...  I'll drop you a PM if/when we organise a spannering day on his car.

We attempted this today in my very damp garage.. started on the bearing about 2pm having spent the morning doing all the brakes and..

.. at about 5pm were putting it back together still with the knackered bearing in there.

Got the driveshaft off, easy peasy.
Got the drive flange off - bit of a faff but figured that out in the end with Nick's tool.
Went to get the hub out .. hit a dead stop.

The handbrake back plate is held on by spline drive bolts for which none of us had an appropriate tool, so we couldn't get that off to bolt the big cylindrical tool on:

Yes, the extractor is fitted using those bolts. They're the 10mm size if the dirt on my bit is anything to go by. Mine is a 50mm long bit, that fits through the hole that's used to adjust the handbrake shoes.

That's the one I have. Very useful, especially the longer bits. Like for this job.
