Gearbox oil cooler leak
« on: 16 March 2014, 18:28:36 »

Right I just got the gearbox oil sorted and found out why it was low in the first place  >:(
The oil cooler itself is fine (the radiator part) but the pipe that comes off it on the drivers side is leaking somewhere near to the top (underneath the block that the cooler pipes connect to)!

Now I have fitted to the car very recently a radiator with the built in oil cooler for the gearbox, This was the only radiator that I could get at short notice that had the oil cooler radiator mounts on it!

My question really is a simple one I guess, Is it easier to get the cooler pipes that fit onto the main radiator for the gearbox cooler (which is currently not in use). Or should I just go out and buy a new gearbox oil cooler radiator unit new ??

Any thoughts appreciated
Cheers Graham

I'd guess (as I know nothing f the 2.2) that fitting the old oil cooler to the new rad, with new/other/used replacement pipes would be cheapest.

No?

I think I understand what you mean  :-\

The problem is where the pipe is leaking ... It looks like there is either a weep on the seals (giving the appearance of a leaking pipe) or right down on the underside of the block that connects the main pipes to the cooler pipes! I do believe that the V6 and 4 pots have the same gearbox oil cooler system on them ... but then again I could be wrong  ???

I will try the cheapest option first and get some new 'O' rings, They can't be that much to buy surely?? failing that, in the short term I suppose I could get some appropriate hose and patch in (really don't like to bodge though)

Ar25 used on the 2.5 and 2.6. And the 4 pots. If correct....

Iirc, and it think I do as I've just had my radiator out;

Between rad and ac condenser is the oil cooler >oil cooler connection block on top of the rad>connector block with 5mm Allen bolt and Alloy pipes that bend over and down the back of the rad> Flexi rubber pipes with hose clips> oil cooler pipes in chassis rail run back up under the steering box and down to side by bell housing> more flexi rubber pipes with hose clips> metal pipes on auto box.

Replacing the highlighted part with a used part should be a two minute job. If I understand your post correctly?

Yeah thats the part that's the problem ... I have (after speaking with Vx) found that I can convert to the earlier system, using the in radiator cooler thats on my new rad for around £75 including vat so that is now a feasible option  also :)

Get the parts from a breaker, superbly reliable items so no risk and going to cost much much less than that

That's an option I guess ... I'm going to bring the car to you Marks DTM Calib, it's going to take me about 3 weeks to get over to you though so theres no rush. We might get to the bottom of this cars problems yet  :D

I'd remove the rad plastic cover, armed with a set of Allen keys and a pair of pliers remove the pipes and inspect the cause of the leak.

I doubt the metal work is the cause. Either the o ring in the join block or the rubber pipes and hose clips are more likely. Simple fixes in any event.

Big money on the O rings then ... I hate transmission fluid, if you get a leak it goes all over the place and never where the leak actually is  ::)
