Can I regass my aircon myself?
« on: 29 March 2014, 06:32:17 »

X168JAT 2.5 petrol manual estate
Aircon does not blow cold. A friend has told me that i can regass it myself. I have seen canisters in Halfords. He infers all I need do is screw the can into the valve on the left on the engine. Is this right?

Cheaper and easier to take it to an air con specialist

The cannisters from Halfords are very good for topping up a low system,BUT if you haven't bought one before, you need to buy both parts, that's when it becomes cheaper to use a local air on place,.ost places charge about£45-60 for a air on regas. :)

If its not been working for some time better getting a specialist aircon place to do it.

They will draw vacuum on system to remove any residue, then should add small charge of gas to check for leaks before putting the full charge including oil into the system.Cots vary between £50-£85 in my experience.

Guy I have been using for years charges £65 for the full service which takes around 1-1.5 hours so its good value.Worth doing it every few years as system will loose a small amount over that time .

No such thing as a "top-up"..its either got the correct charge of 925grms or it needs the old stuff pulling out and correct amount adding.Just putting cannister onto system gives you no idea of how much was in there before

Nope, you can't do it on your own (unless you have the specialist equipment), and those silly "top-up" kits at Hellfrauds I thought were now banned? They're useless anyway.

Yep, the cans are useless. The system needs to be vac'ed out and refilled properly. Using the cans you never know how much refrigerant you've got in it, and you can't exclude air and moisture from the system the way you can with a vacuum pump.

£40 down the road here. Just been to have mine redone.

Unfortunately the valve at the front of the engine is leaking - I can actually see it leaking! So, off to the stealers tomorrow to see if I can get a new valve.

Good luck! They all seem to have problems finding it on the EPC  ???

Found it on the old site ....  :y :y http://oldsite.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1243870617

and support the fitting on the ally pipe with a 17mm spanner otherwise there's a chance of shearing the fill valve off the pipe - ask The Boy  ::) ::) ::)

Oh, I'm sure TheBoy wouldn't make a schoolboy error like that. The weld was probably already weakened by repeated vibration from high-speed running.
