I have just had fitted a new radiator, engine coolant, I notice that there are 2 blocked off connections on the drivers side of the rad. which I thought were for atf cooling. Do I have a seperate atf cooler inside the grill somwhere and is the fan on the front of the rad drivers side to cool a seperate atf cooler. V6 03

Does your car have three radiators or two?

Main coolant rad, front aircon condendor and small rad between the two

If so, that is your ATF rad the pipes for it go over the top of the coolant radiator on the driverside... you can simply ignore the two blanked off fittings

If not, the ATF pipes go to the two blanked off holes on the driverside of the new rad

Hello Al I will have to take off the rad cover to check but there are 2 ally pipes going over main rad.I have been reading old posts and it seems I must have a seperate atf cooler, do those pipes carry cooling  water or atf fluid.

If you have the pipes you has the separate cooler.

If you've just changed your rad & didn't have a couple of banjo fittings on the original, then you have an oil to air cooler in front of the main rad.

If you've just changed your rad & didn't have a couple of banjo fittings on the original, then you have an oil to air cooler in front of the main rad. 

The pipes to the later separate gearbox/ATF cooler go over the top of the radiator and have to be disconnected to get the radiator out.

IIRC the gearbox cooler screws into some lugs in the front of the main radiator. The earlier radiator doesn't have the necessary lugs fitted.

Maybe there is a 'universal' replacement radiator with ATF heat exchanger and lugs for the later type

I have had to fit the same radiator type to mine as was in a pinch ... Separate oil cooler built into the radiator (redundant) but all the mountings for my oil cooler on the front side ... The only down side is there isn't the support bracket on the engine side for the pipes to bolt to, imo that would be a good thing to be there as it stops the pipes flexing around and rubbing on the top of the radiator! Oh that and the fan doesn't sit on it quite the same due to there being no single rail in the centre at the top! does the job though

Thanks for all the replies. I decided to get the rad fitted at local garage,they sourced the rad. When I looked at the job when done I noticed the capped off connections and that got me wondering. That was obviously as it was on the old rad but I had never looked that close. Reading Haynes before the job talking about ATF connections on the rad  probably put me off doing it myself. I must admit that there was a lot of "not sure which rad to purchase" from the factors. If we have an expert in this area perhaps a list of types would help others to decide on correct one but has been said maybe replacements are universal but there is a very wide range of prices quoted.
