I was wondering what the differences are between VW engine codes. My folks have got a 1.0 seat arosa with an AER engine, but there are other 1.0 litre engines but with different engine numbers. When you go to buy parts they need to know the engine type i.e. AER. But the engines look the same, whats the difference?

Often not a whole lot, but you need to know which ones share the same parts.  VW likes making a mess of these things.

There will be multiple ECU part numbers for each engine code, sometimes for the same year of the same car!

I believe all vw engine and chassis numbers begin with CRAPOVERPRICEDRUBBISH and then some meaningless numbers at least that is what appears to be the case for my dad's alhambra.
