he was strung up using non GM crank sensor wire and covered in silicone sealent(booger it still smarts) ;D

If its not saying anything when you press it, somebody has removed the box.

The system was shut down last year (or was it 2012), sadly. I found it a useful warning of upcoming traffic problems.

It was pressed with ignition off if it makes any difference. It doesn't light up or anything either with ignition on

Ah, ign needs to be on.  But the network it needs to function has been shut down.

So what happens if it's accidentally pressed? Wool it give a message for a bit then go away or will it just not shut up. Ie do I need to make sure it's all ripped out?

Only one way to find out :P

Just don't sit in the passenger seat, as the roof section removes and the ejector seat fires....
