2.2 DTi Breakdown
« on: 05 June 2014, 22:58:43 »

Went for the first proper run after clutch change, today. Did about 20 miles. Went brilliantly. Clutch is perfect and power delivery great. The main issue is sorted.

I called in Asda to buy an iPhone FM transmitter, on my way to visit my family, I was planning to do a 140 mile round trip to properly test the car.

I came back out of the store, and started the beast. Drove off, and... oh crap, no power steering! Battery light too. Turned straight off.

Noticed aux belt hanging off and the tensioner for the aux belt was half off with the top bolt totally out. Odd, Ive done no work in this area.

Close inspection shows the top bolt in the aux belt tensioner has broken clean off about 0.5cm inside the engine!!!

On closer inspection, it actually bolts to a bracket which holds the aircon compressor and PAS pump, and the dipstick runs through this bracket.

Had to remove the above pumps to get to it and remove it, most likely I will have to get it helicoiled

So, a minor thing. And I'm pleased it happened now at ASDA, as I will be half way across spain in this beast in about 4 months!!! ;D

But, although minor, I have to ask myself WHY did the bolt break off! I can only think maybe it was loose and has been under too much pressure over an extended time as a result...

Apart from fiddly, getting the large metal bracket off wasn't difficult, the hardest part was getting the dipstick tube out!

The DTi will live on. It's all but a hiccup, just one that I'm spending as much time on as the clutch change ;D ;D :y

Still love the car :y

When that tensioner fails it can cause stress on the harmonic damper (crank pulley) which will fail - look for cracks in the rubber.

There should be a receipt for the pulley and tensioner in with the receipts for that car.

EDIT: Modified because I cannot spell!

Well at least the clutch worked, you wouldn't want to be pulling that apart again I'm sure!
