Auto Box
« on: 11 June 2014, 13:01:34 »

Good morning Members,
I have had to source a new engine and gearbox to transplant into my CDX Estate.
The engine is a 2.2l 16v and the gearbox is Auto (Same as mine).
The donor car (CD) doesn't have cruise control but my CDX does.

My question is can I install the donor gearbox and still have cruise control?

I don't know if the cruise connects to the auto box so amy help would be appreciated.

Regards.....Dave (Sp4rky)

Yup, 2.2 is a DBW engine (electronic throttle)

Cruise is stored in the ECU, it's electronically controlled, nothing mechanical  :y

Hi Tunnie,
Thanks for that, can you help with this:-

Donor car 2002 (52) 2.2l 16v Auto Saloon
My car 2001 (Y) 2.2l 16v Auto Estate

The prop shaft end of the gearbox's appears to have different castings.
One is rounded (Y) the other is square (52)

Good bit of DIY, know it's done right then  :y

Everything should just swap over.

Out of interest why the complete swap?

Gearbox does not get much torque from 2.2 engine, same box used on the smaller V6's

Well my first issue started with a P0170 fault (Lean/Rich Bank 1).
So I cleaned the throttle body, EGR, etc...
Fired her up and she laboured (Missed) so I revved it and it made a horrible noise.
Followed by a metallic tinkle into and down what sounded like the exhaust.

So we stripped the head and couldn't find any problems.
All valves, cams, belts etc....

So we decided to separate the engine/gear box and that is where we saw the damage.
There are six bolts which connect the flywheel to the end of the crank (onto which is bolted the torque converter).
One of the six bolts had sheared and we found it it the Auto bell housing.
It was sheared clean off, no threads showing, perfectly flush with the flywheel.

So this was the tinkling noise we heard and the screeching must have been the flywheel oscillating  :o

Tried to find an engine/gearbox to no avail so I bought a 52 plate CD Saloon with 69,000 miles on the clock and service book.
Thought I may as well do a straight swap because my engine/gearbox have done 144,124 miles.

So I have a spare car to break and sell unless someone wants to buy a very good rolling chassis.

Could you not just drill out the broken stud? :y

James,
As mentioned above the original engine had done 144,000 miles.
Plus if the flywheel/crank did oscillate there is no telling what damage has been done to the crank/bearings/seals'

Anyway she did well, I bought her at 1 year old with 16,000 miles for £10,500.

I've had my moneys worth out of her  :-*
