Wifi question
« on: 12 July 2017, 16:38:48 »

Please be gentle  :)
We are just about to change our broadband to BT infinity from standard BT broadband
With the present broadband the wifi signal is poor when sat outside on the patio and in my shed , with the Infinity we have got BT mini connectors to feed the signal from the hub to the set top box rather than a cable .
I understand how this works through the house wiring . So in a long winded way my question is what would I need to extend the wifi out to the shed I have seen the network extenders that plug in to a 13A socket would this be all I needed , it would only be for iPads

How far is the shed from the house?

Does the shed have power that is supplied from the house?

Not very far less than 5m we do get a signal sat out on the patio but it is not very good
And yes the shed has a radial circuit out to it from the house  fuse board

IIRC these use the earth as a path from the house so if your shed wiring is properly earthed, you should be okay.

Modern ones use MIMO technology across all three conductors (or whatever working combination of conductors they can find, at reduced bandwidth)

Shows how long its been since I pished around with that sort of stuff  ;D

When I did my house, I just run cat5 all over while the floorboards was up for the alarm upgrade I did :y

Back to the OP's question ............ would a wifi extender situated at the back of the house make more sense ?

I've used these power extenders out to my garage & they work a treat. Cable distance must be about 20 metres.  :y

It is from me. I then connected a Coredy  access point (about £30 or less from Amazon) so get a nice little wifi zone in the garage/parking area. Works great. I did a, wired, speed check into the power adaptors and got over 60 meg download speed, so well happy.  :y

Another powerline device (like you use for the telly) that's compatible with the ones you have (most follow a standard now).

Get a wifi capable one.

Do NOT buy a Wifi Extender (the single unit that plugs in somewhere and acts as a relay). They are ALWAYS absolutely universally shite, due to the nature of how they work.

Here is a review on Amazon for the TP-WPA4220:

Size: AV600Style: Faster (N300 Wi-Fi + Passthrough) Verified Purchase
Impressive - easy to set up an works well - gives a strong Wi-Fi signal.

I bought these to give me Wi-Fi at the bottom of a 50m garden. I have mains power to the shed, but wasn't sure if these would work that far away - through multiple circuits/junction boxes, switches, etc. But they work fine - and worked straight out of the box. Plug them in, wait a couple of minutes, and bingo, it works! Very impressive.

And the Wi-Fi signal from the shed (which automatically uses the same ID and password as your main Wi-Fi) is so strong that I can use it in most of the garden - it reaches a lot farther than the Virgin router does! It's not very fast, of course, but perfectly adequate for normal use - and the remote plug has an Ethernet socket as well as Wi-Fi, so I could always plug the laptop in directly if I wanted to do some serious computing in the shed!

These are actually so impressive that I am seriously thinking of buying another remote plug to use as a booster in the kitchen or upstairs, as the plug-in booster we've got was never very good and has now failed completely. These are twice the price of basic Wi-Fi boosters, but work so much better.

Works in his shed  :y
