headlight washers not working
« on: 24 June 2014, 22:02:56 »

OE03 EWW 3.2 manual petrol saloon

MOT tester today mentioned that the headlight washers were not working. I have checked, the central pump in top of water reservoir bottle whirs away, but no water comes out of nozzles. Windscreen washers work all right. What should I do next?

Do you use screenwash throughout the year, or just water?

If the latter, remove the pipework and bottle and flush through, but you may need to replace the pump and nozzles (but as nothing to lose, worth trying to clean them)

I use screenwash all the year round. Jets do not appear blocked. I have removed the pump from the reservoir, it whirs merrily away, but immersing the inlet pipe in a glass of water and feeding power to it, it whirs but does not pump. I cannot see a filter. What can be wrong with the silly thing?

I thought it might need priming, so I immersed the entire pump, except outlet pipe and conncetor end, in water, and tried again. Still no output. I conclude the pump is faulty. Perhaps the motor is no longer turning the impeller. It does not look dissemblable, it's all glued together. I guess I need a new pump.

sounds like the pump spins but the impellor does not... new pump sounds like the way forward ... possibly from a breaker here ??

terry paget - yes, I think you've proven that the pump is knackered :y

Good to hear you use screenwash all year round. Many don't, and they then suffer a build up of a white, slimey substance that blocks up the pumps and jets (as no filters on headlights), or the filter on the windscreen one.

Thanks Rob, and thanks to all for advice. Replacement washer pump now fitted, and headlight washers recommissioned
