Other way round Chris, the whole idea would be to increase mpg at motorway speeds, I reckon at 70 in 5th with a 3.45 ratio would work out about 2200 to 2300 against the 2600 or there abouts, question is how would it behave in first and second around town, I reckon, being a manual box, theres enough torque in a 3.2 to deal with it, thoughts.  :-\

The manual box has a stupidly short first gear so I can't see it being a problem.

Problem is, the engine is pretty flat below about 2500 RPM so it's not going to be great on the motorway, IMHO. Be in and out of 5th all the time.

Still, nothing ventured... :y

Thanks Kev, to give some idea, I can wack a Manual 3.2 manual into 5th at 30 mph and drive it lightly without issues, obviously on level ground at that senario, any hill or increase in speed required, then its a change down, I really cant see a problem a 70 mph tbh, chould be wrong, but my biggest issue could be 1st and 2nd around town, although I reckon with 5 gears to play with might be worth doing some trials.  ;)

Mine used to live in fourth and fifth around town, only a problem if you need to make serious progress, but then, that's what second is for ;D

ah, yes sorry. Well in that case I'd bet on the higher gearing not helping.  :-\ although I've probably got that arse backwards as well   :-[  ;D

Not an issue with the Monaro/VXR8, although they produce a decent slug of torque... but the effect at cruise will be similar, a lazy, economical cruiser :y

yep.. reason is to rev the engine as quick as possible..getrag 240 is also stupidly long on 2nd and 3rd.. even the 260 has shorter 2nd and 3rd..
