I am an old member forgot old password and E-mail so starting all over, the mig was running with no problems till my son wanting to try my old obd2 scanner to see if it still worked, he said he was looking at the engine section to do some test which he can not recall what   so withe the result engine misfiring and not ticking over he did mention later that he heard a bang under the bonnet when ignition switched on  I have since removed plugs tried for spark on each plug which is there but still not happy suspect Dis plugs ok hope he has not damaged ECU also maybe a sensor gone would appreciate some help on this matter.

Taking the plunge got to start some where so buying a DIS unit as I have removed that much gear to get at it so will carry on as no suggestions have come forward.

Not much to go on to be fair a bit like saying, "the wheel fell off when I slammed the door, do I need a new door?"

Any codes present for a start

Also which engine/gearbox? Age of the car? Petrol or Diesel?...

It's unlikely to be the DIS, since that has 3 completely separate coils inside it, and very rarely would you see all 3 failing at the same time.

As said, you need to get a code reader and see if there are any stored codes. Also, let us know the model, year and engine type and we'll be able to make further suggestions on what to try.

Taken DIS off looks like new could cancel the one I ordered the miggy is 2001.Elite saloon 2.5 looks like I will have to put it all back and check codes.

Ok, so it's a 2.5 V6 which means you can do the paper clip test to work out what codes are stored.

Just a thought here, but given that this issue apparently only happened after using a diag tool - I wonder if something like the block learn values have been flattened? Would that cause running issues until it's learned again?

All sounds a bit strange to me.

However, paper clip test is what you want to do as said previously.

If that's not fruitful (although I suspect it will be) then you have an engine miss. Therefore spark (which you've tested), fuel, air compression.

If it was me and I heard a loud bang I'd be checking the timing and doing a compression test.

But hopefully your paper clip test will provide some answers before having to do that

All back in place should have put new plugs in but too far without car had some spare ones tested the best out of the bunch started car to see if same problem was there  started fine just purred along not looking for codes at the moment wife wants to go shopping, told the lad not to touch my gear again if he has no idea what he did all the hard work was done by me only , which I could have done without he has since gone down to Nottingham for a job peace at last thanks for the help cancelled DIS all right that saved me money, did notice DIS on car had only 2 bolts same went back  cheers

Mine too cos theyre too much of a pain to get the two in closest to the head. Matters not though.
