Delighted to say that I sat at work, and marked the moment with 2 minutes silence, as did all other members of staff. Also the radio followed suit (plenty of times I've had to mute the station) and there were no awkward moments where a customer came in looking baffled (happened before in a previous job) or loud noises from outside, cars beeping, transit revving etc... the shop, office above, street outside was silent.

A genuinely sombre, sobering, and reflective moment done with dignity, and happy to say so. I'm not sure if it's possible for there to be such a thing as a 'good' or 'nice' two minutes silence, but if there is, then this was one.

I know this is going to be a bit controversial, but I think we are starting to overdo the whole Remembrance thing.    When I was a kid it used to be Remembrance Sunday and a few days either side, but these days it seems to go on for at least a month with folk on the BBC wearing poppies in the middle of October! 

Don't get me wrong, it's important that we remember and I always wear my poppy with pride, I always watch the Festival of Rememberance at the Albert Hall and often the ceremony at the Cenetaph.  This year of course is especially significant with the 100 year anniversary of the start of The Great War, 70th anniversary of D Day and the withdrawal of British troops from Afganistan, so I get why it's special this year, and rightly so! 

I do think though that we are starting to get a bit 'Mawkish' about it all.  Is it me?

Like everything, it gets commercialised by the money grabbers / media to a certain extent but to those who served or have lost someone in any conflict, its still a special time when you just take 2 minutes and think

All the Red London Buses (about 10,000 of them) where instructed by Radio to pull over and switch off the engines for 2 mins, guessing some of the customers weren,t happy.

Yes, TG; I was going to buy one or two of the ceramic poppies from the display at the Tower of London that will be sold off to benefit the charity until I learned that the bulk of the money would go to the organisers (commercial interest) and not much to the charity itself.......

I think I have to agree with you Steve. A couple of days ago I admit I did say to swmbo 'This is getting a bit in your face now.'
I take nothing away from the importance of this occasion, and long may it continue if it stops all the carnage.
I do not want to hijack the thread, but along with the WW1 anniversary, we are also commemorating  WW2 and conflicts since.
But when the Nazi's tried their tricks the whole world (with a couple of exceptions) rallied against them. Why is this not happening with ISIS, a brutal dictatorial terrorist organisation that threatens the world. !!!!
As Chris (swmbo) says, at her branch of Waitrose, after an announcement, all staff come out from their counters and observe the two minutes silence..however a lot of customers just carry on, some even moaning that they should be served. I kid you not !!!
