One for the Taxi drivers amongst us
« on: 28 June 2008, 17:04:11 »

Hi Guys
I no there are one or two taxi drivers on here and wondered if they could give me a bit of advice please.
Occasionally I drive old car's for weddings and prom nights etc. This is mainly as a favour to the owner of the cars and as such he just gives me a couple quid for my time every now and again.
Last night we dropped off at a prom and was immediatly stopped by council workers demanding to no where are private hire licence is. well my friend does not have one. But his cars are only really sent out to friends and aquaintances it is not really a business.
So does he need a private hire licence, and do I need some kind of licence aswell.
Thanks
Mike

P.S. Sorry to be so long winded.

As Jon says, you do now as the law was changed a few months back.

If you were only doing airports/weddings/special events/etc then you didnt need to have a Private Hire or Hackney Vehicle license and thereby you didnt need a Hackney or Private Hire drivers license

Then the law was changed and vehicles doing such work need plating as either Hackney or Private Hire.........and because of this only licenced drivers are allowed to drive such vehicles......therefore you need a PH or Hackney driving license as well.

Hope this explains  :y

Should add tho.......as you dont really want a hackney plate or PH plate stuck on the back of possibly a vintage/prestige vehicle, spoiling the look, as long as the vehicle is only used for special events/etc you can apply to the license authority for an exemption to display such plate.

If the authority is happy the vehicle is not gonna be used running about town and just for occassions then they will issue an exemption certicate..........which has to be kept in the vehicle and produced when requested by licensing authority/police.

Also im pretty certain he will have to apply for an operators license as well as plating his vehicles.

Thank you gentleman.
Yes they are old/vintage cars, some as old as 1915.
I think this will probably be the end of his loaning out these cars.

Thanks

I took swmbo to a prom last night, there were all sorts of vehicles including a fire engine limo that was an emabarrasement, given how shabby it looked and loads of limo's, no plates though.
