MID advice required
« on: 30 December 2014, 21:12:19 »

I have spent several hours searching the forum, but I could not find all my answers, so here goes :)

My computer display is apparently a MID? (1996 2.TD) Is this the correct display for my car?

The one fitted actually looks like a later mode (maybe)l, I can post a picture tomorrow if that helps, it sort of lights up but no digits are displayed whatsoever.

Do I need to replace it with one that comes from the same model engine & gearbox?

Cheers :)

If the display is simply faint, then renew the bulbs ;)

The early ones do lose pixels, but total failure is strange..... unless a previous owner has tried to fix it, and made a balls up?

I wish it was that simple :)

I think this maybe the case, I will try & post a picture.

Once removed, the colour of the plug/socket is all that matters. The configuration, which varies from model to model according to wheel size/fuel/gearbox is reprogrammable with Tech 2. That said if you aim to get one from a car with the same wheel/tyre size and gearbox, then the trip computer will be pretty close ;)

If yours has a yellow plug, theses are generally less reliable units, but the car plug can be swapped for a grey one... fiddly but doable ;)

So...
1. Establish which MID you have by removing it.
2. Check the bulbs in the back of it.
3. If bulbs dead, replace them and test. If all good job done. If not...
4. Acquire a MID with grey plug. Along with a section of loom if yours is yellow.
5. Swap the wires one by one from the yellow plug to the grey one, paying close attention to the colours.
6. Check bulbs in new MID. Then fit it.

Job jobbed :y

As above strange the whole thing has gone, normally they just lose the pixels here and there till they look like Chinese writing.

Easy to get out (10mins tops), hopefully may just be plug at back not in properly you never know!!

If the board computer lines are above the rado/music info line, its grey type plug. If below, its yellow/black plugs

Here are a couple of pictures, the 1st picture is with the key in waiting for the glow plugs to warm up & the 2nd with the engine running.

Top pic lights off/display undimmed, bottom pic lights on/display dimmed :-\

Been cooked by the look... Is this a new, sudden situation or a gradual one?

It was like this when I purchased the car.

Might be lucky and find it's simply a loose plug, but you'll most likely need a new one :-\
