The early ones do lose pixels, but total failure is strange..... unless a previous owner has tried to fix it, and made a balls up?
I think this maybe the case, I will try & post a picture.
Do I need to replace it with one that comes from the same model engine & gearbox?
Once removed, the colour of the plug/socket is all that matters. The configuration, which varies from model to model according to wheel size/fuel/gearbox is reprogrammable with Tech 2. That said if you aim to get one from a car with the same wheel/tyre size and gearbox, then the trip computer will be pretty close
If yours has a yellow plug, theses are generally less reliable units, but the car plug can be swapped for a grey one... fiddly but doable
So...
1. Establish which MID you have by removing it.
2. Check the bulbs in the back of it.
3. If bulbs dead, replace them and test. If all good job done. If not...
4. Acquire a MID with grey plug. Along with a section of loom if yours is yellow.
5. Swap the wires one by one from the yellow plug to the grey one, paying close attention to the colours.
6. Check bulbs in new MID. Then fit it.
