vibration under high speed braking.
« on: 02 February 2015, 14:56:27 »

Hi

When braking at over 50mph I get a vibration/wobble through the steering wheel, it can get quite violent.
Also when on full lock there is a noticeable clonk when starting to straighten the wheel.

It's very strange as it doesn't wobble every time I brake and can go days with ourt doing it.
I have changed all the brakes so don't tthink it's a warped disc. Also I have changed wish bones, drop links and removed front brake calipers and applied copper slip to eliminate sticky caliper.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should change next?

Thanks Ady

I'd be looking for front suspension/steering play. Some wishbones are tragically shite.

Had this very thing on the Carlton. The vibration could also be set off after hitting a pot hole. In my case it turned out to be the centre tie bar (the long bar between the steering arm and the steering idler). Only found the cause after replacing both track rods, both drop links, roll bar bushes, both shox, both strut top mounts, both wishbones, and brake disks and pads several times.

Thanks for the advice everybody  :y

Is will try wishbones, steering bit and top suspension mounts as I know the wishbones were cheepies as they went on me when I was 500 miles from home and had to get an emergency swap out. And the other bits will probably be near there end of life.

Can anyone recommend a quality wishbone brand?

I concur, wishbones but more specifically the wishbone bushings. My car did the exact same thing before I replaced the originals with polyurethane ones from Poweflex. It's been 4 years and she brakes smoothly every time. http://www.powerflex.co.uk/road-series/products/Omega+B+1994-2003-2658/1.html

You'll have to use the GM rear/vertical bushing as there is no poly substitute yet. Some OOFers are experimenting with homemade poly bushes. http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=118957.0

I had a set of Delphi wishbones last less than 1000 miles >:(

Now I only buy/recommend...

If cash is tight fit as is and refurbish old ones with new bushes/balljoint, otherwise polybush before fitting :y

At 1.32 euros to the pound that is £68. What a bargain!
