I noticed recently that the brake fluid level was below maximum but above minimum. I pressure tested the brake and clutch system from the reservoir at 10psi using a Sealey VS820 brake and clutch pressure bleeder and there are no leaks. Is this the correct psi to test with?

I have a problem that is getting worse. It is getting increasingly more and more difficult selecting 1st or reverse gear when the engine is running. What I didn't realise was that although the fluid level was above minimum it was below the clutch pipe that connects to the reservoir. Would this introduce air into the clutch system and could this be what is causing the problem?

Thanks

The selector rod under the gear lever needs adjusting :y

Iirc summat in Haynes about it... a hydraulic issue would affect all gear selection/drive :y

Also clutch fluid take off is just above minimum level...

Al, when the engine is off I can select 1st and reverse just fine. Would this still point to the selector rod adjustment?

Thanks

Well that's daft. It surely should be just below?

Just above so that if you have a brake system leak you cannot drive the car with no brakes... without looking, it might be at the minimum line, but certainly not beneath it ::)

What's the mileage on the box? Could also be good old fashioned internal wear... have you checked the oil level?

As said, a clutch issue would affect all gears equally. Is it a dog to get into first/reverse when cold?

What's the mileage on the box? 116000 miles Could also be good old fashioned internal wear... have you checked the oil level? No not yet

Ok, first up check the fluid level... and top up as required. p

Possibly worth changing if you can get it done for beer tokens/properly... are you near HenryD?

If that doesn't sort it then the linkage needs looking at... there's a bracket that supports the rear end of the gear selector gubbins...  bolts to the floor pan and the linkage assembly is attached by way of a rubber bush... replace this with a suitable M6 bolt and a selection of washers...

This...

Becomes this...

Also, if your gearbox rear mounting looks like this...

Then you might find that the selector mechanism doesn't operate true :-\

Start with fluid level though :y
