air con leak 2.6 v6
« on: 27 February 2015, 09:51:26 »

so windows steaming up etc  and air con not working so went to kwik fit to get check done, they filled etc with dye and seemed to work ok told to run for a few days then bring back to get re check which I did this morning. after getting shown and chap saying now empty again he cannot 100% state where leak from although he does reckon from a pipe connection at front engine between bumper and radiator on left side looking at engine, there are 2 pipes running along from near side under battery to drivers side then a joint before heading to other side radiator, one of these joins/bends has a jubilee clip which obviously should not have being pressurised so he reckons leaking from there. is there a way of getting this part replaced/sorted? if any easier description of where it is directly underneath the air intake funnel. in front of radiator thanks

Usual suspect is the condenser at the front of the rad.

Properly I.D. the leak before messing about. You "might" be fixing what ain't broke.

What he has suggested is the Power Steering cooler... ::) ;D

Dozy bastid... ::) for there to be dye there, the condenser is shot... simples.

Easiest solution, as your thinking of changing it anyways, would be to part ex it/swap it/pop it on here as a project... plenty of estates on the bay for less than £600 :y

Does it hold pressure when the filling pipes are in in Garage ?

If so, A/C system and joints maybe OK but there is of course the HP and LP valves which are prone to leaking (even with caps on !).

There is a link and guide on here (and part number) for the HP valve (one near front engine bay) and the LP one (back of bulkhead) is a standard Schrader car tyre type valve core.

I had both of mine changed as it lost pressure over time and all ICE COLD now  :y

HP one simply unbolts from pipe (make sure support pipe so as not to snap anything) and LP one all you need is a valve core tool !

DO NOT mess with valves if pressurised !!  Get the garage to change them before then fill her up again with R134a (950g of it !) and pressurise

hi sorry been out, so events, went to kwik fit who done initial check on machine it detected no leaks so they filled it and seemed to work fina for about 2 days then went back to steaming up windows and the pully not turning so guess stopped again, so went back to get check as they had put dye in, but after chap looked at he came over and said they could not for definite locate leak, they did point to the 2 pipes that are running along front of fans between water reservoir for windscreen and fans anyway seems strange that they put dye in and can't locate leak, surely if full it would show somewhere with uv lamp. or maybe its covered and cant pinpoint. so now not sure what to do.
they did mention 950 filled up

Get a new HP valve from Vauxhall, the part number is on here somewhere, and a couple standard Schrader car tyre valve cores and core removal tool.

The HP valve is not that much from VX and valve cores are buttons on flea bay.  Even the vx dealer should be able to get the right HP valve.  It bolts onto pipe at front so DONT let them con you that need all new pipe if its just the valve which is weeping !!

When next go in for regas ask when they depressurise it if can put the two new valves on.

Meantime, unscrew the two valve caps and pop a bit of liquid on to see if bubbles ??  If it does, its that valve.  Both of mine bubbled so I replaced both valves and all is well  :y

Also, I had a bit of green dye on the inside of the LP valve cap which confirmed valve leak !!!  I cleaned the caps beforehand to then check ! :y

Holds vac when connected to the dalek, takes two days too lose all refrigerant,
Classic leaking LP or HP valve, also check the bottom of the condenser,as there could be a pin prick,.
The dye should be clearly visible.

From Brians description,  the dye is visible on the power steering cooler... Only aircon component anywhere near the power steering cooler is the condenser.

I wonder where the leak is... ::)
