As gear boxes go, the auto is far more superior in world of auto boxes, than the omega manual is in the world of manual boxes. In that the manual has a comparatively long throw, and the clutch pedal travel is vast. It is not considered a good combination generally speaking.

So effectively, given a manual is generally more desirable, on omegas there's little to choose between the two.

Personally, the auto is plenty good enough, add in a bit of stop start traffic and the idea of driving an omega manual becomes prety abhorant at the best of times. It's just way too much of a chore.

But each to their own. If a manual is your bag, there's a guide on converting, and quite doable.

I know I will need clutch, flywheel, stick & etc

R28 gearbox is recommended then ?

If you converting a 3.2 Auto to Manual, idealy your also need to change the diff to bring it back to normal Manual spec.

To be honest I would rather a manual as My last two omegas where the 3.2 special ex government cars & they were both manual as standard

I wouldnt say I will be using for drifting but At least if the options there for a slide or two it's possibly  8) & with it being manual you can get better mpg  :y

Not all 3.2 Specials were Manuals, some were Autos, but better Mpg (a lot better) than the Autos.

If its better Mpg your after, get a 3.0 Manual and Chip it for a few extra horses and improved economy over the 3.2's  ;)

R28 gearbox is recommended then ?

I have seen gearboxes for sale r25-r28 ?? What does this mean

The R28 is a stronger box that was originally fitted to the 3.0 manuals. There is apparently very little difference between that and the far more common R25, however, so an R25 would probably be fine.

To be honest I would rather a manual as My last two omegas where the 3.2 special ex government cars & they were both manual as standard

A manual will give better MPG around town than an auto, but on a long run there will be nothing in it.  In fact, the auto gives longer gearing when cruising, especially if you use a manual box without also swapping the diff ratio to 3.7, so, depending on your driving pattern, you might find the auto better on economy.

Thanks Kevin

I've always been more popular to manual for some reason & I wouldn't be a fan of doing a lot of motorway miles or long distance travels, probably 200miles pw at Max.

I was thinking of using the r25 as can't seem to get hold of a r28 as handy.

However I am waiting reply on a 3.2 special manual for sale so could be less hassle
