Any Central Heating Experts
« on: 06 July 2008, 18:55:20 »

My timer/controller is making a noise.  Its a Danfoss CP715, and it intermittently clicks every second (relay type clicking) flashing LEDs at same time. Only seems to be when both outputs (heating and water) are on (which is a problem, as both water and heating on 24/7).  Almost as if power supply cannot quite give enough power for both relays, and the PSU is shutting down - which would go along with the batt icon momentarily coming on (signifying no mains power) when it happens.

Think you have hit the nail on the head......sounds like a failed supply internal to the controller/ They are generally nasty cheap resistor dropper type designs! Could also be the backup batery dead and taking extra load (shorted cell)

Hard wire them both on as a short term fix.

Short term fix is just to have water on, as programmable room stat is hard pinned down to 10C.

Repairable, or just renew (similar looks like £50 from screwfix - http://www.screwfix.com/prods/63760/Plumbing/Central-Heating-Controls/Danfoss-Central-Heating-Programmer)? Chances of the fp715 having same baseplate mountings and wiring as cp715?

Backplate should be compatible, especially if from same manufacturer.  Most are made to a standard euro pattern now, so you can swap easily.
Did my own a few months back, not even same make, but same 'euro' backplate. straight swap, and re-programme to my own settings.
(my local heating merchant was cheaper than screw(u)fix, and more helpful, as I took the shot controller to him, and he advised a cheaper but compatible replacement, and no waiting for the postal system!!)

repalcement should be a five minute job.  :y

(Have you tried 'techII' ing it  ;D ;D)

Had a similar problem a few years back and I replaced the controller and that sorted it :y

Presumably as it still displays time with mains off, the battery is probably OK?

Difficult to guarantee, the controllers are designed to keep running until the battery voltage is mega low so may still be a shorted cell.

We used to have a Horstman and also had problems (not able to drive the relays at all!), fitted the Drayton Tempus 7 as it appears to be better made and has holiday function which was useful.

Heating electronics do appear to be appalling bad - this has failed, and the boiler PCB has failed on a number of occasions (yes, Potterton).  I have changed the control units in her dad's boiler, along with his timer, and the one in her brothers.

Only thing that seems to have lasted is the programmable room stat.  Seems to work well, if somewhat bulky.

A new programmer should just fit on the backing plate as other have said......but be careful of the wiring.....if you dont have the old manual for it then you'll have trace the wires to see where/what they goto.

I changed my programmer a while back for a different make......the wiring was different so needed swapping about a bit altho it would have just plugged in.

My old programmer had a 'holiday' function tho I dont have a problem having to wait for 1/2 - 1hr for hot water/heating when i come back..

I got my new controller from Wickes....around £25 - £30 iirc, tho my local Wickes dont give you a choice, its there own brand or nothing (tho the controller is actually marked as Siemens just in a Wickes box)
