If you get TC via abs as the link in faq (although that may be out of date by now but the procedure still stands) and buy 20litres of oil and three filters you get you abs joining fee back in one go.
Then anything else is at TC prices all year. Why fish about? Just check where your nearest TC dealer is etc...

i now have the mann ones  Annoyingly Eurocar parts sent me the mann w712/22 which is obsolete and has been replaced by the w712/75.  however the mann website lists the same specs for both.

The mann is completely different, shorter yet heavier, different holes.  the shorter length would indicate slightly less filtration but to be honest the mann looks better made and the extra weight with shorter length must indicate more paper and/or thicker steel.  i didn't add before that the gm one had some small what looks like grey paint splatter on the inside (i.e. wrong side) which is not good.

gm 259g length 87mm
guttmann 263g   length 87mm
Mann 276g length 79mm

mann hummel seem to have a very good reputation and the slightly shorter filter will be easier to fit and remove with my cap wrench.

Um, unless there's been a recent change, arent Vx VOF93's a pound coin, on trade club?

in a factory mass producing filters it is possible I suppose that they deliberately downgrade the 'vaux' badged ones  :-\
More likely downgrade their own aftermarket part.

In the auto industry (and many others), the product manufacturer provides the exact spec of what they want (except AMG, but that's another story for another day ;D), and the part manufacturer makes it to that precise spec, usually written into the contract is that item cannot be sold to anyone else.

Hence, because xyz make filters for Rolls Royce, its unlikely that xyz branded filters will match the Rolls' spec.


TC is free if you qualify. If you don't, you can get it by joining some of the VBOA affiliated clubs such as ABS.

I agree with ..al...genuine only....I can never understand why people just do not want to pay a few quid more for the genuine filter and oil when we are talking about the heart of the vehicle and its not as if we have to change them every month,after all if cheaper inferior parts were used and they happen to allow particles to pass through thev system and ruin the engine we would be the first to have a moan...so come on open up your wallet and buy genuine...after all it makes sense  :y

The Old Man was buying the 'cheap n cheerful' oil filters for the Weasel for a good few years at a local independent motor factor (admittedly a perfectly good brand, Mann or similar) - until we discovered that actually genuine GM on TC was cheaper!  :)

Best to use OE in my opinion, they are not expensive.

one final update on oil filters, I see the wix filter for the catera has an anti drain back valve, visible in the picture http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/PartDetails.aspx?Part=51040.  I think that is the same engine as the mig.  the vaux and other filters definitely don't have that.  i can see it might be advantageous both for less messy oil changes and for faster oil pressure on start up - less wear.  bit pricey though £6.
