You're looking for something like Farecla G3/G5/G6/G10 rubbing compound. Like all abrasives, the higher the number, the finer the finish. There are lots of other similar products; what you buy will depend on what you can find like locally. A look in your Yellow Pages will lead you to an automotive paint supplier who will be able to help you with what you need. That will include which polishing head to use with each product.

You can buy this stuff in Halfords, but a trade supplier will be much cheaper.

A polisher will easily polish or burn through paint if you're not careful especially on edges. Some practice on a panel that isn't important would be a very good idea! G3 used by hand will refresh badly oxidised paint, but it is a lot of work. The polisher is used to speed up the process and reduce the effort involved.

These products are not polishes; they're to create a finish ready for polish which you will have to apply afterwards.

Thanks nick , the polisher ive got has 3 different coloured sponge heads plus a velcro sand disc and what looks like a soft polishing mop like wool . Never used one before and take in the notes about burning the paint . The car bonnet is the only area that will need cutting back and polished , the rest of the car should be ok to just polish  :y

Use plenty of water to reduce the chance of burning through but BEWARE!  Cutting Compound (especially when used wet) get's everywhere.  Mask off everything you cannot easily polish by hand, and invest in some dust sheets from a hardware store to cover the windscreen/scuttle.  Mask the headlights with masking tape, cover the grille etc.

Seriously, it's surprising how far that stuff can travel through the air.... and how difficult it is to remove from places you didn't know existed!

I'd also advize some disposable paper type overalls too as you'll get a good covering of the stuff-unless you like that sort of thing!!!!

If it's just the bonnet, you might as well do it by hand. It will only take a few minutes.
Although once you've done it, I doubt you'll be happy with the rest of the car.

Ive already done it once by hand but dont think ive been using the right stuff to cut , it was hard work especially removing the cutting stuff off  :( With the polisher i should see better results . The rest of the car just needs a light polish .

Make sure surface is clean and dust free before beginning-maybe even clay bar it-then G3 followed by G10[to get rid of swirl marks]then a good quality wax polish.
