Cig lighter
« on: 05 June 2015, 12:03:46 »

I think the cigarette lighter hole is in an awkward place , especially that you have to have the door down for access:-\ When i have to plug in any accessory like sat nav ect there's only just enough room for the plug to go in and its fiddly at the best of times with the cig hole that moves up and down .
Was thinking of removing the whole ashtray and making something better , after all the ashtray never gets used :-\

Not that ill be making it out of old bits of wood  ::) More subtle to match the existing  :)

Just mentioned this in 'what have you done to your car today' thread, actually. I've had thoughts of having a second 12v outlet in a more accessible place, too.

Such as maybe the centre console - in the case of FLs sat underneath the armrest might be a neat place. I am installing a usb port inside the centre cubby as well as some form of dock for music, in my PFL but shhh, that's copyrighted now, my idea! (feel free to copy, though  :y)

Other thoughts I've had would be a possible mount for a tomtom, ipod, maybe even use it as a fold-away place for extra buttons. In my case when I fit internal boot release (it's happening!) I'll lose my one remaining blank button. I'd also like to move the TC button somewhere else, and in-so-doing gain the handy storage compartment to the left of the head unit.

Another thought, install some of the cupholders from the vectra - there's half a chance they'd fit. Might be some in the garage...

Think i threw a vectra cup holder away But have a 3 point accessory adaptor but will need to hard wire that . Quite a few options for when the ashtray is removed when thinking about it .. got to be better than keeping it just for loose change .

You still see them in scrappys, wouldn't worry.  :) I'll try and get in the garage some point over the weekend, see if I can find the Veccy cupholder. Could quite easily be too large to fit anyway, I may be talking out of my exhaust.

Actually thought it may be easier than first appears to fit one of them flip-out screens like you get on head units. Maybe a way to install a modern (and very out-of-place-looking) mp3, bluetooth-touchscreen head unit behind the ashtray cover, thereby leaving the car's original head unit untouched. I know such as Aston do this with their service they offer, they'll fit ipod compatability and air-con to your DB4, should you wish it, but hidden in all sorts of clever places, so as not to detract from the originality of the vehicle.

Must say I like the way you can open the lid, then lift the main armrest part, revealing the cupholder, and in-so-doing create a small 'table' for rear passengers.

I suspect the FL cupholder addition was in part because the Vectra had been launched with its 'party piece' cupholders, and thus made the Omegas complete lack of seems a bit woeful. Now that 'cupholder oneupmanship' has ended in car design and the dust's settled I don't think anybody cares. I would appreciate a cupholder in my PFL, though.  :)

Hard wire a double socket into the fuse box and run the cables to the back of the drivers cubby/base of screen as required :y
