Throttle position sensor showing invlaid. Clue?

Not sure, but I had that on a 2.2 I was looking at today - seemed to clear after some use of the throttle.....

Check the TB isn't full of crud causing the butterfly to stick.

Also double check the error, as I've seen TPS faults as both the throttle pedal (on FBW) and the sensor.

Dont know anything really about these things but I have had a look at these figures and thought figures below might help.

On idle or partial load (less then 10%
TPs1 0.61 - 0.72
TPs2 4.29 - 4.33

Throttle position invalid(between 40% throttle and 100%)
TPS1 4+
TPS2 0.6+

on 100% throttle TPS2 drops to 0.61,0.64 as soon as you lift off TPS2 rises back up.

If it helps throttle body is clean all vac pipes seem to be attached.

If Iam reading the figures correctly I would say TPS2 is sensor attached to the throttle body itself.(iam guessing)

It looks like a pedal issue to my untrained eye. The reason I say that is because the pedal has dual potentiometer built in as a fail safe. The idea being, one goes 0-5v (0-100% throttle) the other works the other way around 5v-0 (0-100% throttle).

In theory, this means that the figures should never be the same, but it also allows a fail safe. I'd borrow a pedal and repeat the test.

I take it the TPS is the round black think on the top of this pic

That's the pedal position sensor.. The TPS is part of the throttle body but it depends on the idiosyncrasies of the code reader as to which is being reported as TPS.

Tech 2 allows the throttle body to be exercised while watching the two TPS outputs. That would be my next step if I suspected a drive by wire problem, although I've also seen a certain code reader showing "invalid" TPS on a perfectly healthy car.

Can the pedal assembly be removed and dismantled for inspection? Could be a wear issue within it :-\

The log I've seen seems to suggest the correct substitute values are going in though, but does make me suspect the TB

Throttle position heads the column in question, so my description is wrong above. The two sensors are in another column. So it is the actual throttle that is showing either "idle" "partial load" or "invalid" the later being In relation to heavy throttle use and almost always at wot. 100% and down to 40% odd throttle giving mostly invalid. With idle giving % single figures. So according to code reader that must not be named this column for throttle position is either idle, partial load or invalid

The problem that occurred when I drove it was at wot. About 5k rpm and a slightly closing throttle might very well match the symptoms.

Question is, is it normal for throttle position to show invalid at any point?

I've seen exactly that on a log someone sent me in the past. Pretty sure the throttle system turned out to be working perfectly in that case.

At the end of the day, if the ECU detects the slightest hint of a problem with the DBW throttle, it'll store a code and probably go into limp-home.

Certainly matches what I was seeing on the 2.2 without any problems being experienced.
