2.0 fails to start, AA called out.
« on: 11 July 2015, 20:37:41 »

Yesterday I was in Oxfordshire. MY son Ben was using the R reg 1999 2.0 manual petrol estate to convey rubbish to the tip, and it refused to start. He called out the AA, they towed it to my home for him, reported 'fuel pump running all the time' and removed the fuel pump relay. Today I replaced the purple relay with a spare, and after replacing a flat battery the engine started and idled normally. I took it for a 6 mile test run, no problems, no EMLs.
I do not understand it. The car is normally my wife's car, but she says does not trust it now. Can anyone explain its behaviour?

The AA man had removed the inside purple relay and left it on front passenger seat. It is still there. I replaced it with a similar relay I had in my parts store, presumed good. I did not know the adjacent relay, also purple, was also a fuel pump relay. Shoud I also replace with a simlar relay?

Both relays the same :y

One is for fuel pump, tother is for the injectors... Have experienced failure of the fuel pump relay on several 3.2s...

Any sign of scorching on the old relay?

No sign of scorching. So may I presume the cause of the failure to start was failure of the relay?

Scorching would be a clear sign of the relay being stuck on, but certainly running the car with your spare relay should prove it :y
