oddly i do remember a headline from the Times motoring section a good few years ago, as you mention TD the build quality seemed to dip a while back  :-/ the headline was " Even German taxi drivers are snubbing Mercedes"

Intresting huh ? ;D but sure there over their little blip ( yours seems to suggest so anyway  :y )

TD. I would keep it for another year, but please reduce those oil changes to 5k.. especially on a diesel!

1999 model was probably one of the last really good ones. Not as over engineered as the 80's and early 90's models (they do last forever!) but way ahead of the more recent models.

The timing chain life is very much regulated by the oil changes so I feel 10k changes are a false economy, especially at 170k.

I would budget for a new exhaust though, surely it can't go on much longer??

Consider the replacement TD.  Initial outlay for new car, servicing costs to get up to your high standards and then unknown problems in the future.  At least with the Merc it's only running costs to cover and if ithey get too much - swap it then.  For what it's worth I'd keep it.  :y

LB. Point taken about the oil changes  :-[

Its hard trying to get the cars back for servicing....the guy that drives the merc is not very good at telling me when things need doing to it  :(

Can you believe he waited until last week before telling me the headlights didnt work.....turned out to be both headlight bulbs were blown.....so he'd been driving about with only one headlight working for dunno how long  :-/

If exhaust goes it will be kwik fit cheapy......i think they put 1 year warranty on em which will be good enuf  :y
