Need a Wi-Fi card for my media centre
Range is important as I intend to stream music and possibly video to my garden next spring and summer 
I have 1 PCi slot and 1 PCi express slot left on the motherboard.
Currently running Win 7 Ultimate with a 3.4 ghz single core processor with 2 gig of RAM (if that lot makes any difference)

Been busy working recently so price isn't as critical as it has been in the past BUT obviously not looking to spend stupid amounts of dosh     

All useful advise very welcome

Wifi is shite. It will always be shite. Accept it, get over it, move on.

Presumably your media center is in a fixed location, so hardwire it.  Anything portable can run of your router's wifi, but only SD video will stream over it.

Wi-Fi is shared (with his knowledge  )  with a mate who is a few doors down from me.
KC-Com are too bloody expensive for a landline / internet and for a fiver / few cans of beer a month, he gave me his password   
Works out great because he has unlimited data and I don't use it for anything other then email / internet browsing

What device are you streaming it to? Far easier just to put a local copy on the device if out in the garden, rather than faffing around with long CAT5 cables or WiFi. Unless we are talking live?

That involves forethought, and why the MS Media Center is such a great bit of kit compared to all the other similar junk. It can immediately stream anything and everything to its extenders, and those extenders are just like being sat in front of the Media Centre. Even a woman can use it.

Downsides are:
Only *really* good extender is XBOX360/One
MS disbanded the Media Center devs just before Win7 came out.

And use Remote Potato and/or XBMC/Kodi for streaming to other devices, though you don't get the MS Media Center interface

Just a mad idea of mine tbh
The cunning plan was to purchase next spring a Wi-Fi enabled iPod radio so that I can stick it in the garden ect when i'm out there and stream some of the vast amount of music I have stored on the media centre to wherever 

Pretty happy with the media centre now i'm SLOWLY getting my head around how it works even though as TB said a few months ago, the motherboard and other bits do make it a bit slow to navigate when trying to get things done quickly 

We have a PS3 in the house (Mini Me's) but I don't know if that does the same sort of thing that the Xbox can do 

Also after a few beers    a mate came up with the idea that his desk top projector can accept video signals via Wi-Fi so my garden went to the top of the list for watching footy matches in the garden again after a few beers 
That last bit may be total 'dangle berries' / beer talk but I thought i'd run it be the more knowledgeable folks on here

The Media Center is wired to your router (as it needs Internet access for guides etc)?  Is so, any wifi device connected to your home wifi can see it.

No wired internet router in the house
I use a plug in Alfa AWUS 036H Wireless usb network adaptor to tap into my mates wireless router down the street when ever I update the media centre or use the laptop hence looking at PCIe network cards 
If I purchased and installed one of these cards (instead of oppsing around with the Alfa every time) would it work as a internal network / talk to other devices so to speak   

Sadly, until work / money proves to be more stable in my household, I won't enter into any contracts to get hard wired broadband into the house then expand it around the house with cat5

Adding a Wifi card to a Windows PC probably won't do what you want, it will not be Infrastructure Mode, but Ad-Hoc.

I can normally get most things working if I press enough buttons / idiot it hard enough with a screwdriver or hammer but the finer points of computer networking takes a while to sink in
