To do with the revving the nuts off it emission test on diesels? (I used to get asked to confirm the belt was 'in date')

Smoke test requires them to rev the living shit out of it which isn't good for a slightly worn belt

I shouldn't imagine it's good for any engine, esp one that's seen a few miles/years. I wasn't aware of this test, seems a bit basic and brutal.

hold it at about 4,500 rpm! Who ever uses that in a diesel!

Smoke test requires full throttle and release. Most garages are a little more sympathetic than that but questioning whether the belt is in date is supposed to be done. In fact, most MOT stations will also have a poster up.

If you tell them it's never had a cam belt change, they will simply refuse to test it.

The engine will be governed not to exceed a safe speed anyway, and I know I find the governed speed on diseasels pretty readily when "pressing-on", so not worse than it sees on the road with enthusiastic driving.

The acceleration under full throttle gives the maximum smoke output, so, in the absence of a rolling road to put load on the engine, it has to be full throttle applied briefly without load.

Its a shit test though because your average diesel is driven like Miss Daisy until the smoke test whereby every bit of loose soot in the whole exhaust sytem is blown into the sensor giving interesting results,the gutter trade will often make easy money out of this by giving an italian tune up but charging for something much more complex ,
